Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Baby Blue Eyes')

I bought a triple fan of Baby Blue Eyes in 2016. It bloomed the first season and I used the pollen successfully for hybridizing that summer. It did not bloom last year, 2017. An overhanging tree branch was shading it more last summer because of an extremely wet season. This spring we pruned the tree back and much more sun is reaching this part of the garden now, so it should bloom better.

I went out and counted fans, and this spring, 2018, it has 13 fans, so it is a vigorous grower. It also came up early and well even with a cold, late spring this year. I hope to see blooms this year.

I have grown 'Baby Blue Eyes' for many years and I agree it can be a vigorous grower. However, I suspect that it is not the strongest grower when conditions are less than perfect. It bloomed year after year until it had a bit of weed competition when it stopped blooming. Considering the size of the clump (large) when the competition occurred, its response was surprising as it immediately stopped flowering.

I have grown BBE for several years and it is a vigorous grower. The pictures above are an accurate representation. I do not get a lot of branching or buds per scape, but it makes up for it with its increase and good scape to fan ratio.

I have had Baby Blue Eyes for 5 years, growing it very successfully in zone 3.

In 2020, I cross-pollinated BBE to Forsyth Flaming Snow and put the resulting seedlings of the "double cross" in my gardens last year, in 2021 ... waiting for flowers either this year or next to see what happened, but it turned out that it was definitely both pod and pollen fertile!

I don't have this plant in a great place, it's pretty shady. I originally bought some from Ogden Garden, then supplemented more fans from my club Daylily sale this June. I currently have 6 fans and I had 7 blooms this summer. They sure are cute!
