So I know it's an odd request but I'm looking for bagworm specimens from the unusual host plants. I have been making a display of bagworm cases from various host plants to show how the larva incorporates plant material into the bag. This is a list of species we currently have in the display:
1. Abies concolor- Concolor fir
2. Cedrus atlantica- Blue atlas cedar
3. Cercis canadensis-Eastern redbud
4. Chamaecyparis pisifera-False cypress
5. Diospyros-Persimmon
6. Gleditsia triacanthos-Honey locust
7. Hypericum-St. John's wort
8. Juniperus virginiana-Eastern red cedar
9. Liquidambar styraciflua-American sweetgum and Juniperus virginiana- Eastern red cedar
10. Malus 'Sutyzam' Sugar Tyme-Sugar Tyme crabapple
11. Malus-flowering crabapple (variety unknown)
12. Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns' –Serbian spruce
13. Picea pungens –Blue spruce
14. Picea sp.-spruce
15. Pinus strobus –Eastern white pine
16. Pyracantha-Firethorn
17. Quercus bicolor - swamp white oak
18. Quercus macrocarpa- bur oak
19. Ribes aureum-golden currant
20. Robinia pseudoacacia- black locust
21. Rosa-Rose (domestic-cultivar unknown)
22. Taxodium distichum- Bald cypress
23. Tamarix-salt cedar
24. Thuja-Arborvitae

I haven't seen any around my place, but your display is fascinating! I didn't realize they incorporated the different plant materials like that. I hope you get some different ones!

Karen, it's pretty amazing what gets incorporated into the bags. The bag on the sweetgum pod is half cedar and half sweetgum. The larva must have switched host plants halfway through development.

ha- I now see, I was 'set up' when I said they only like arborvitae.. haha

The bag on the right side contained a male moth, notice the partially exposed exoskeleton. Only male moths leave the bags and fly.

Is that what that was?? I just pulled off one of these off my Japanese Maple. Thinking it was a dead leaf, it didn't come off so easily. I thought how odd it was to be on there like with thread! If you want it I'll dig around where I tossed it and get it to you.

I can't believe no one has unusual bagworms on conifers or deciduous plants. Im not crazy, this is a real request.

Your display looks fascinating! Sorry to not be of any help, but I've never seen those here. Are they on the west coast? I've heard people mention bag worms before, but they seemed to be referring to tent caterpillars, which we do have plenty of, but they don't look nearly as cool as your bagworms!

I've kept watch too, Greg, and haven't seen a single bagworm anywhere.

I haven't seen here either.

Is this a bag worm of some sort?
They are destroying my viburnum. Can't figure out how to kill them.
