I didn't see a seedling post for August, yet, and my efforts to procrastinate until someone else did one failed.

These are going to be pretty random I suppose, but things are winding down here. Still, it's something to look at:

Shirley's Delight (Todd) x Dr McGregor's Garden (Davisson) (posted two siblings of this in July)

I had a surprise this morning. I have previously posted my sibling seedlings of my cross with Cosmopolitan x Clouds of Kisses. This morning, sibling #5 bloomed a full double. It had some extra petals on its second bloom, and the first bloom was a single.

I did some research and here is what I found. Cosmopolitan, pod parent, has 13 child plants, two of which are doubles. Clouds of Kisses, the pollen parent, only has one child, a single. Then I looked at the pod parent of Clouds of Kisses, Janice Brown, and she has several child plants that are doubles.

There have been so many amazing seedlings posted by everyone this year, patterns, pinks, purples, narrow and full forms. I've so enjoyed seeing them all.
Inside this afternoon due to the heat & humidity today I've finally sorted through 1000's of images so thought I'd post a few images of several things I'm working on...outside the box stuff. Most of these are selected sdlgs, some bridges others possible futures, that are now at clump strength. Patterns have been my "fun" thing for years. Never very many seeds made but always some surprises.

This is a new 2018 from a cross of Navajo Warrior x Cy's Pick. Several years ago Cyrus was walking the sdlg rows and I asked if he found anything he liked. He walked around to another row and eyed two orange sdlgs.....the only two in the entire bed...I don't do orange. So I tagged them and moved them later that fall to the keep bed. Maybe I should listen to him more often! The sdlg and garden named parent Cy's Pick.

No big secret I like and work with Sculpted forms. A few cristate sdlgs I've been working with....

This is a dark red pleated and cristate diploid.
Thumb of 2018-08-06/Char/fc9304

The relief forms have taken a number of years to get where I want them. Early issue's were hardiness, sometimes loosing 1/2 of a relief sdlg crop and then opening problems, sepals unable to stay closed until the bloom was ready to open and failure to open due to the heavy throat tissue and our cold morning temps. This led me to working several different lines and sorting them by type. The first type has radiating ridges between the veins...

This is a combination of the two types and in a color other than yellow/cream/polychrome which has also been a major focus for me.
Thumb of 2018-08-06/Char/8c34a2

The second type is the traditional "carved" look...

Thumb of 2018-08-06/Char/821204 Thumb of 2018-08-06/Char/f55945

When you stuff all that petal tissue into a bud you get huge buds like this...
Thumb of 2018-08-06/Char/ba04ab

Now that I've worked out the no open and the sepal-no-stay-closed issue by lengthening the sepals I need to widen them so they recurve and don't stick out like sore thumbs. Smiling

I agree with everyone's comment, Char. Those are amazing seedlings and so hard to pick a favorite or 10. Whistling

Patterns are always a eyecatcher for me, but the relief and carved forms are as well. Especially like, okay Drooling ing over the one with the combo and color!

Wow, so beautiful, Sandi and Char! Sandi, love the colors on your second one esp. that gorgeous light blue eye.

Char, it is really interesting and exciting to see your daylily seedlings esp. those you are hybridizing for specific goals. Can I ask how many crosses did it take you to achieve the above seedlings? My favorite ones are the patterns ones esp. the bitone pattern seedling and the sculpted cristate form in the 6th and 8th photos. I would also love to know their parents. The bud above is incredibly huge! It must be heavy too! Do the scapes hold up the flowers well?
