Your boots are a lot safer in those crowds though Ursula. I've been stepped on many times at those shows. Hilarious!

Ken, @Drdawg is asking -

Bill, Lindsey, and others. Have you ever seen the C. Caribbean Skies entered for AOS awards? Have you ever seen it for sale? I would love to find this variety for sale but have looked for years and have never seen it. I have even contacted numerous of the major growers and every single one said that they had never had it. In fact, none of them had ever even seen it. How can a variety that seems to grow so well and has such large, fragrant, gorgeous flowers be unavailable? I guess I simply don't understand the orchid-growing/selling business. Sad

Well, here I am back from the first orchid show of the year, and can you believe it, my feet did not get burnt, and I only bought one orchid, off my list of two. A little plant of Rlc. Coral Gold 'Pacific Rainbow' just had to come home with me after seeing Lindsey's lovely one. The guy in the booth actually recommended that I buy the small plant instead of the bigger one that was $10 more, because he says it's a vigorous grower! I was thankful.
My new baby.
Some eye candy for our enjoyment on a January day:

There were a lot of these Phaiocalanthe Kryponite crosses at the show, it's the orchid du jour, it seems.

Yes, those Maikai crosses are vigorous, generous bloomers! The other lower foreground is a wonderful Why Not cross. Nice small size.

Specimen plant of Andree Millar, just magnificent! The displays were nice this year with the colors grouped instead of all mixed up. I liked the look a lot.

Sometimes I couldn't tell which plant went with which tag, and sometimes couldn't see the tag at all.

Partly the lighting but this (left side) one had huge flowers of a very dusky rose red. Really pretty and unusual.

Going to have to find myself one of these with the ivory petals and deep red lip, such a stunning combo. They were way too much money at the show, though. Didn't get a name off this one either, I don't think! D'Oh!

Bill, this one is Onc. Twinkle 'Pinkie' with even smaller flowers than the one you showed us yesterday. They were selling tiny starts of this in 2in. pots for $25 so I was able to talk myself out of one.

A really wonderful Phrag and I was most impressed with the size of the plant - at least 4ft. tall with probably 30 large buds coming along.

The B. 'Peach Birds' is still on my list, but there were very few plants for sale, all big ones in bloom for too much $$.

Ken @drdawg, and others of course too -

I can find no record of the cross getting any AOS award. There is no way we can ever check to see if it ever made it to a judges table.
It could have been "screened" and not scored or it could have made it to a judging table but did not get the
minimum of 75 points. Those plants would have the score sheets destroyed and there would therefore be no record in the Wiz or AOS program.
The only other thing I can add is that blues can produce floppy flowers of less than desirable form or flower count. You have to get good quality flowers. Those flowers need to open near a judging or show date. Then the owner has to have the desire to take it to judging. That is asking a lot.
Just look at how many of us have ever taken a plant to judging? I have, maybe 15 plants and I have 6 awards. It is maybe as simple as "it can't get awarded if it is never brought to Judging!!"
How many others have ever taken a plant to judging???

Bill, this is a response to Ken's question upstream, right? If so, would you like to tag him in your post?

Well it was originally but then I figured that everyone could be interested.
I probably should have tagged it to get Ken's attention but am unaware as to how to do that.

Bill, you just need to put an @ before Ken's handle which is drdawg (no capitals, spaces or punctuation). You can edit your post to put it in, using the "Edit" at the bottom of the post. Only the poster can edit their own posts.
