This group has excellent taste so wanted to get an opinion.

When we first started our farm, we ordered some very young grafts from a large grower. Most were true to variety but a set of "Meikouhou" tree peony was not. Instead we received some that flowered like Meikouhou and others that were pure white. (none of Meikouhou's typical basal flares).

But all the plants are beautiful, very healthy and grow easily (even in our 4b growing zone). They are now mature (`5 yrs old). A couple of examples:

This one probably is Meikouhou but to be cautious, would not sell as a named variety.


This one is definitely not Meikouhou but in some ways I like it even more. Many others are similar to this one


Do you folks think these are pretty enough to sell? I would price them very low - probably <$40? And folks would get a very well-established "surprise" white tree peony.

If I don't sell them, I will definitely keep them as they are beautiful and could be used to line garden paths etc.

Any input appreciated!!!

I think both are beautiful and $40 is a very good price for them I would buy them without hesitation but I am in zone 3.

I would buy them for that price. Pure white one looks alot like Godaishu.

All - this is great feedback. I will probably try to add to our July catalog then!! Will just take more thorough pics to show the true range of forms and shades.

Gary - I agree. The 2nd does look very similar to Godaishu.

There's another that is almost indistinguishable from "Renkaku" but to my eye slightly more striking.

Will also monitor these more closely for fertility too. As I believe I remember seeing pollen on some of them.

They are definitely beautiful and worth $40! Looking forward to seeing your July photos!

ElPolloDiablo - yes. there is another one that looks even more like Renkaku than the one in the picture.

It even flowers at the same time as Renkaku. I carefully compared and the only difference I could see was the stamen. If I remember correctly they were much longer.

The picture I posted is that of a first time bloomer I took several years ago. The plant hasn't grown much in size (it should be about six years since it was grafted) but the flower production is absolutely ridiculous for the size.
Right now it's completely dormant, but if in a few months you need "hands on" measurements I'll be happy to oblige.

Agreed! Put the pics out there with the fact that it's NOID and on it's own roots—the person lucky enough to be first in line will be getting an incredible deal at the price you're talking about. I'll be fighting Craig to be first in line....

At this time I already have three white trees and they all produce multiple seeds. The first photo is similar to my Yue Gong Zhu Guang (Candlelight at Moon):

Did you have those shipped from China? Or were those TPG plants? I find Chinese types harder to find here!

Those are beautiful. A good peony buddy once told me that any tree peony from seed will sell for $30-$40. He said look at all the no named ones that come from China with a bud or two to the mass greenhouses. And certainly you'll have better than those.

Magnolialover - that's a very good point. And yes these are better than random seedlings. Flowers are all well-formed and large. Great input!

I have another NOID herbaceous that was sent to me as krinkled white but is soooo much prettier than that.



I like it so much I plan to propagate it and sell it as a NOID. It's so pretty it needs to be out there in the world!

I think people in general appreciate someone who is upfront and state that you don't know the actual name.

I have a gorgeous red tree peony that I am clueless as to the name, but will attempt to propagate in the future.

I like the petal formation in that one. Prettier in my opinion, than 'Krinkled White".

If you propagate, I would love to purchase. Also, I do have a similar red but perhaps a different shade? Will dig out the pic later today and post!

I look forward to seeing your photo. My peony has a crepe-like texture. I can't recall if it had a scent.

I'm fairly certain that I bought it from a vendor at the Nashville Lawn and Garden show that sells potted tree peonies in his booth. They are just listed by color. Sometimes they have an open bloom, which makes it easier to chose. Most likely he buys TP rootstock from China by color.

Beautiful red tree LG! I too have a NOID red which I purchased from a local nursery. The petals are not as wavy but just as beautiful.

I too have many NOID tree peonies! I have about 7 tree peonies whose names I am not sure about. THough I was able to get possible ids, I am in no way sure that they are what they resemble to. How many NOID tree peonies do you all have?
