off the top of my head - I'm thinking there are holes drilled into the middle of each rock and then put onto wire is rather sturdy to hold it up like that - I could also be very wrong Whistling

I think you're correct, Vic. It would have to be thick wire or even bent rebar. The rock drilling would probably ruin a lot of bits, but it could be done. I love it and would sure love one in my yard.

It looks pretty large. I would guess rebar, assembled horizontally on the ground, then erected. Perhaps a good outdoor adhesive to hold everything in place. A masonry bit would probably last. That doesn't look like real hard stone like granite.

I think it could be glued, but probably wouldn't last as long as one constructed over rebar. It's intriguing. I might have to see what I can do. We have a lot of rocks everywhere.

Karen, I don't know about using just adhesive. The contact surface area of the rocks would have to be pretty smooth and the weight of the rocks might be a problem. If I were doing it I would start small just to get an idea of what's involved. There's always room for rock art somewhere in the garden or the yard. If you build one be sure and post pics and a description of how you did it Smiling . It would be an interesting project.

I was afraid it was drilled and run metal bar through it. Crying

I think that would be a really hard task. I'll wait and let one of ya'all go first Rolling on the floor laughing

I LOVE this and would like one in my yard, I think it would be cool to do an arch you could actually walk under too. I wonder if there is a way to cement them together??

Here are some simple ones I have done that are held together by just gravity. I would love to have a huge work of art but I think I might have to settle for smaller scaled ones. Drilling through limestone is not that bad, but every other one I tried in the past ended up breaking in two. I have three flat limestone rocks that stayed in tact and that is far as I ever got. I have those being used in different ponds to hide parts of cord for a water feature.

Thanks for giving us that website, Audrey, and your sculptures are wonderful! We have plenty of rocks on our land, so I'm going to have to give it a try. I'll probably stay with smaller sculptures first, and would really love an arch like he has.

Thank you Vicky and Karen. Small ones are fun but a huge one would be really great!

One way these large scale projects could be done is with large Styrofoam pieces like for a dock. A little stain on some cloth concrete and you could make any rock shape or color you desire. It could be put over a rebar or a metal fence post for stability. Then after it is assembled keep painting on layers of concrete cloth. I have thought about doing that for an area I want blocked off to look like giant boulders but I have not decided how I really feel about fake rocks.

Many of Disney's vertical elements on their sets are designed and built with fake rocks....very strong ones, but fake none the less....lots of construction built within/behind them, mind you.....just a thought. Smiling

I love Rock Cairn Structures; I did a google search and found lots of photos, including the one in FrillyLilly's first post: https://www.liveauctioneers.co...

I read that many are created, balancing the stones! It's hard to imagine such patience ... which I have little of. I'd have to use some sort of strong adhesive. Green Grin!

Mine isn't an arch and has only a few stones compared to that. Its mostly iron metal sculpture. But I will take photos. The guy who makes these travels with the art festival circuit, we met him a couple years ago at a show both he and I were artists at.
