I want to grow a climbing plant on two of the terrace walls this year (not a house wall), and is wondering if Ivy is suitable for that. Also if there are different types I need to be aware of. During winter it can get pretty cold here of course. You can normally expect up to -10 celcius at some point during winter, but it can also get colder, during especially cold winters. During summer though, the area I want climbing plants gets a lot of direct sunlight, which is fairly "strong" during that time of year.

Anyone know if Ivy will be able to handle those conditions? If so, will it need to be watered regularly, and will it be able to stay green all year and?

Ivy cold hardiness is about -30C.

Is that for any type of Ivy? Do you know how well it does in hot summer sun?

That was for English Ivy - Hedera. I can't imagine it gets hotter in Norway than it does in Reno.

Great idea to grow Ivy on your terrace wall, Roarstor! Smiling
It is a valuable plant for wild life, bees, butterflies and many other insects feed on the flowers, and the berries (if you let it bloom) are a winter source of food for many species birds in the winter, besides providing nest opportunities.

I have a lot of Ivy growing in my garden, different types in different locations and conditions, all do well in full sun and even deep shade. The English Ivy, Hedera helix and its cultivars, the Irish Ivy, Hedera hibernica with larger foliage. Hedera canariensis probably would not be hardy in Norway..
Personally I find Hedera helix the most attractive especially the cultivar 'Saggitifolia'.

Thanks for the info! Looks like Hedera helix might be the way to go. They seem to be easy to obtain here as well. I just need to figure out where to put the roots, since there's no soil on the terrace, and space directly below the wall will be limited by the outdoor sofas.
