Hi folks,

I realize this may be like finding a needle in a hay stack, but I thought I could ask. Does this fella look familiar to anyone? I have a 'Happy Returns' and ' Stella de Oro,' but it doesn't resemble either (I bought it while in bud, was hoping for something other than yellow, but here we are. ).

I don't know if I can help but need more info. Size of flower, height of scape. Looks a lot like Stella de Oro in your picture even if you said no.

I agree with Marcia on every point. Was this your first plant to bloom this year?

I'll have to measure tomorrow. I was thinking it wasn't Stella because the size of the plant, but I'm no daylily expert, hehe. It doesn't appear to be a "dwarf" to me, but then again I doubt I'd know what I'm looking at.

I also didn't notice the waviness that my Stella has on the edges of the petals, is that an indication of being Stella or not?

Yep! My other two bloomed last year (have buds on my Stella atm).

Well, the size of the plant is about this big, so maybe dwarf is not as small as I'm thinking!

Stella's kind of weird, too. It's registered to have 11" scapes. And I see them that size in parking lot islands and between roads for decoration. But my Stella are really big, old clumps. Probably around 30 years old, because I know who built the garden at my house, and when they did it. My records say I get 20-24 " scapes, and I can get anything from 8 to 13 buds on a scape. But I think the 2.75 " flower is pretty standard.

If your flower is a little less than 3 inches across, I'd guess Stella. If it's less than 2, Jablonski also registered "Mini Stella", which is supposed to have a 1.25" bloom an be a few inches shorter.

Sorry, I will have to do the measurements tomorrow. I forgot to (it was raining this morning) and when the weather was permititng, I weeded and got sunburn. Probably fried my brain too.

I am no help, but I used to have an early blooming noid daylily that was very similar to Stella, side by side you could tell a difference. If I remember, the noid was a bit wider bloom. It never rebloomed though, so I got rid of that one.

Of course now I go to measure and the blooms have closed up shop. But, the scape is about 12" from the base to the bottom of the flower. I have more buds forming, so I'll have to get back with you on flower size.

I'll have to note when my known Stella blooms and make comparions. I'll be darned if it is a second Stella. I bought the daylily with the excitement of sight unseen, but I sure wasn't hoping for another yellow daylily, let alone one I already have, lol. But, as long as it grows and is happy, I'm happy!

I don't want to enable. but you can go on the lily auction and buy all sorts of daylilies from $5 - 100+. You will know what you are getting. Or not sure where in GA you are but I am sure there would be a daylily farm not that far away from you to visit and you can see what you're buying if you go during the bloom season. You will be amazed at what is available in the world of daylilies.

Well, shucks. At least on the plus side, I have read Stellas make good DLs for container growing and that's what this one is in.

My Stella is blooming, so I took a picture for comparison. No new open buds on the unknown daylily yet, so I'm waiting to measure a flower once a new one opens.

Does petal layout helps determine a cultivar?

I noticed on the unknown daylily, the petals are reversed compared to my Stella. Where on the unknown you have two large petals on top and one large on bottom, my Stella has one large petal on top and two on the bottom.

Could they still be the same cultivar or are we looking at something other than Stella?

The petal position will change with every bud. Take a look at this one of Cradle of Bethlehem.
