A few times now I have gotten some tree-mails from people asking me to send them seeds and daylilies for free of course. Got another one this morning. What is that all about? I don't respond, but really? Shrug!

Absent!

I wouldn't have the nerve to even consider asking anyone for a free plant. Obviously, it doesn't bother those asking.

People are nuts. I was on here for one week, and I get a tree mail asking me for seed....one year ago now. I don't get it. But I am wondering how many others get hit up by these people.

I have, said I would send a few plants for postage. Seemed weird but thought what the heck found out she had asked others too. Thinking she wants to sell them eventually since only wants named varieties Hilarious!

I have been treemailed by someone recently also asking for seeds for postage and did not respond. Gardeners are friendly people, but we are not gullible.

What raised a red flag for me was the person said (paraphrasing here) "my income is low and can't order from a company", but went on to say they "had some ordered and can trade in the future." Almost the very same wording in my treemail was included in a post in the irises forum.

I don't know if the person is sincere or not, and if they were, it is sad that they couldn't reach out to a neighborhood gardener to ask for seeds or starts.

If the person asking is a member here and has been active in the forums and contributes with post regularly you get to know some things about them. If any of those people ask about trades or plants for postage, I am happy to respond to them. Maybe I can or maybe I can't, maybe I will or maybe I won't, but I don't get offended if they ask.
I do have to take into consideration how much time and energy I will have to spend on the project, and if I actually have enough of the seeds or plants to share. Often I will be saving the plants for trades (the best way to increase you selection at affordable cost).
I have found that sometimes when people are asking for free seeds or plants they have not given any thought to how much trouble it is to collect and save seeds, and especially how much time, and effort it takes to dig and pack and ship plants.
I have sent plants and seeds to several members here on the forum, and believe me I enjoyed communicating and sharing with them all.
Now if it is just someone who just registered, has not taken the time to let people get to know them. If they have not participated in the forums, have submitted no photos, etc. That is a whole different story.

The person who treemailed me joined last September, has made 5 posts in 5 different forum and all posts were asking for seeds. No pictures submitted... nothing but those 5 posts.

Just read my post, and I realize it doesn't say much about my heart or my faith in my fellow man, but we get this skepticism pounded into our heads at work because cyber security is so important to our company.

I don't trust posts like that, even if they are well intended, unless they come from a regular paricipant in the forum. I don't answer those emails, and I certainly wouldn't click on anything. The one I got had a clickable email address. I would never click on that. Last thing you need is ransomware or some other malware from careless clicking.

Mine was from Florida but under a different name. To me, it looks like some kind of scam - trying to get phone number or email addy etc. Just best to ignore them.

I have gotten them too, but they were asking for different plant seeds. I don't answer unless it is a known member who has been around. I think many register here just to try to get free plants or seeds.

I've received one from Florida too. Even though they're relatively new to the NGA, I answered them bc I don't watch a whole lot of forums, and they wanted 32 of my named daylilies! Glare

You can see all the posts they have made, do their posts bear any resemblance to their reqests?
