The Summer of Stolen Tomatoes

By Sharon
June 20, 2012

They were only little tomato plants, each no more than two or three inches tall. I carefully dug two of them from the family garden and transplanted them to my own private garden hidden behind the playhouse. After all, who would ever miss two little tomato plants?

THIEF! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

What a COOL story Sharon and so fun to read. I just knew those tomatoes were going to come right back up where you tried to bury them Whistling

Mostly I think it's so sweet that Aunt Bett and Granny Ninna let you get by with it Green Grin!

Makes me hungry for a tomato sandwich.

I'm trying a couple new (to me) heirlooms this year. Can't wait to see how they turn out.

Such a cute story of remembrance. I was afraid you were going to break out Ina rash from all those 'maters!

Hehehe, me too,..thinking about the rash! I thought for sure you'd get caught, Sharon!

"...though true heirlooms are those that come from seeds handed down from generation to generation since around 1940. "

I think I'd be more inclined to take that date much further back than 1940. The Abe Lincoln sandwich you show dates back to 1923 and has been "handed down" since. I have some tomato varieties dating further back than that and considered "heirlooms".

All in all, a great read, Sharon! I love your personalization of it all!

No rash, Bubbles, just juicy tomatoes.

You are right, shoe. I think our heirlooms had been in the family since they settled in that area. Long before 1940. But that was the time when people started realizing what treasures they had and saved them religiously from then on. My family anyway.

Thanks folks!
And thanks for the picture, shoe!! Makes me sooooo hungry!

Reading this was so much fun. And it made my mouth water just thinking of those luscious, juicey tomatoes.

You would have been such a fun childhood friend, Sharon! (And you are now a fun adult friend!)... but I would have loved sharing one of your stolen tomatoes, and I would have thought you were very brave, or a little crazy... risking getting in trouble like that!

I think it's interesting that at such a young age, you were already planting things around 'your home'... your playhouse obviously needed a garden!

There were few children nearby, Brenda, so I just did what I saw the adults doing, I planted!
No doubt if you had been there, we would have managed to create a Blue Garden!
Thanks!

Add a bit of onion, a touch of garlic, some olive oil and a hunk of cheese and we'd have a full meal!
