This is my first year growing Japanese irises and it's so exciting to watch them get ready to bloom. First to open is Dewa Banri.

I can't believe that this is a first-year clump! The other ones, which you can sort of see, aren't nearly as huge, though they're all putting up scapes. This is one vigorous iris!

Does anyone else have pictures of Japanese irises to share?

i've posted these elsewhere @tienito, but here are my few ji's, and i think @lestv has some, too.

altho' i've had them in previously owned gardens, these acquisitions are about a year old. so the clumps are very small. i am just thrilled they're blooming. Hilarious! Hurray! ( some of my clumps from my previously owned garden are in my
avatar, and that bed was about 10-15' long.)

thank you evelyn. these were my first love, but the bearded now share an equal spot .

in the bay area, the ji's are a little easier to care for, but never had reblooms (i watered the irises with the backwash from the pond we had, and didn't have to do much fertilizing). my little shift to the bearded happened when i learned some tb's did a second or third season bloom. Thumbs up

in this garden, i have a low spot that stays damp almost all year 'round. it's from neighbor's runoff and my own watering. i was in a quandary, what might survive and thrive there? it's only about 18" wide (20' long) with pvc running in that space, too, for irrigation. i've been experimenting with things to grow.

so far maiden hair (Adiantum raddianum) has volunteered from airborne spores, i've planted bromeliads, brunnera 'jack frost', dianthus, lobelia erinus, , some si's and now a few ji's. so may the hardiest plant or plants, survive.

Daphne, those are beautiful. They're each striking in their own way. Here are the four other ones that I have blooming - all first year plants.

Tienito, that 'Raspberry Glow', is really something ! Where'd you find that one at, if I may ask ? It's so nice,I am tempted to start on those, now !
btw Since I noticed you are up in R.I. do you know where Bellevue Ave. is, in Newport ?
I was trying to locate an old Victorian home, & find out about it, that used to be in Newport, by a place called something like "Lilac Row' or Hedge, or something like that...Any idea?

Daphne, Lake effect is indeed very beautiful. I can't wait until it has made a full clump.

Arlene, your JIs are gorgeous! Do you know the name of the tall lilac purple one (third picture down)? I have a weakness for blue and purple irises!

Shawn, I know where Bellevue Ave is, but I'm not very familiar with Newport and haven't heard of a Lilac Row or Lilac Hedge. I hope you find information about that house. In response to your question, I bought Raspberry Glow from Cascadia Iris Gardens, which shipped me very healthy divisions of Siberian and Japanese irises. I highly recommend them! Raspberry Glow is simply gorgeous. The deep blue wash over the falls is hard to capture on camera but really stunning in person.
