We have August 1. and here is the new thread for August!
Let me start with my Cattleya warscewiczii, it opened this week. This one came bare-root from Ecuagenera.

I took it on to the deck for some pictures, it is now in the living room!

And there is my old Summer bloomer Cattleya Penny Kuroda 'Spots' with the first of two spike open. I always look forwards to this one blooming here in the midst of Summer. Nicely scented too.


And looking into another spot in the cage, Jumellea comorensis showed a few blooms.

I love the warscewiczii!! Yes, say that three times fast and your tongue will be tied up in a knot and you won't be able to eat for hours! Those large floppy flowers with a beautiful lip are fantastic! Love it!

You know, it pays to dig through Ecuagenera's bare root plants pile, when they come North to a show! Good stuff! I love this one!

My favorite thing, at a plant sale is to find a bare-root pile of orchids to dig through! You found a real winner there, Ursula.

I can't believe it's August already. Hurricanes a-comin down here. I am heading out to Utah for another two weeks of grandma duty on Sunday, so will miss the peak bloom of my lovely little Den. biggibbum var compactum. It is slowly opening 5 spikes and will be a real sight to behold by next week. Will have to ask my hubby to take pictures for me. I also have a nice fat spike on C. Chief Sweet Orange getting ready to open and I'll certainly miss that one. The plant is declining sadly, so this may be it's last gasp.

I haven't made the attempt to divide it yet, Alice. It's a bifoliate Catt and they never take kindly to being divided, even when the plant is obviously in two parts. I'm afraid I'll just kill it outright. But . . who knows, desperation may be the mother of invention and after I get home from this trip, maybe that will be the time to take the bull by the horns, and saw it in half.

I'm thinking that growing these plants in conditions that really are too hot and wet for them for at least half the year may have something to do with why they just last so long, then go downhill. I really can't see anything outwardly wrong with it, and have tried a bunch of different stuff to revive it. But it continues to shrivel up its pb's and dry off it's leaves. New growths have been getting infected with black spot this summer, too, which doesn't help.

.....and sometimes no matter what you do, the plant declines. Perhaps it just is at the end of its road...Hopefully you can save a piece!
Your Den bigibbum looks great, Elaine! You will surely still see it blooming when you return.

The Great Greenhouse Re-do is almost complete New shade cloth, new water system (not quite done) and misting system, all cleaned out and mostly repotted.

Thank you BigBill. Ianclarkara was a new one on me too. I think Australis helped me out with that one as the tag just says 'Ink'.

Alice, The wire panels are from a store supply warehouse. Daughter used them in her Craft Booth but then gave up Craft fairs so they were free for the grabbing. So far, they haven't rusted but if they do, I know where I can find more.

I like those panels too! Much easier to shuffle things around as light changes, I would think. Love those orchids too!

Oh boy! I like all three of those.
Coral Gold has a gorgeous lip with splashes of color on the sepals and petals. Very nice contrast.
The Goldenzelle is beautiful with the greenish petals and sepals and deep yellow lip. I'll bet it is very fragrant?
Diamond Girl is one 'Classy Broad'!!

Lindsey, I got the Penny Kuroda years ago from Waldor Orchids, after seeing and smelling them at one their exhibits.

Daisy, your greenhouse looks really nice! and bright! Your Habenarias are way ahead of mine, looking pretty!

Thanks all! I just looked at RHS and see that this Chia Lin X has been registered as Rlc. Suzuki's Matrix. Looking back in my records I see this bloomed last year and it IS fragrant , Bill ! The Diamond Girl came from Anthony Millet, who gave our club a very entertaining ( think stand up comic ) lesson on hybridizing.

All are wonderful, Lindsay although I'm kind of surprised at the Suzuki's Matrix being a bit plain, given it's spectacular parents. Just love the Diamond Girl, that's my kind of flower. Elegant.

On the good news/bad news front here, the Chief has popped open all the flowers on one stem this morning. They're nice, but smaller than usual and a much darker color than I usually see on this plant. Good news is there is another spike in the works. You can readily see how bad the foliage looks.




Doing last-minute fungicide treatment and moving things around today to make less plant chores for Marsh while I'm away. Hope things survive.
