This lovely plant is being sold at my local garden centre but it's not in the database and I can't find much information on the variety.

Does anyone have information about whether it's a valid name and could be added to the database?

This discussion was going around in 2009. 'Ring of Fire' came into the market AS 'Ring of Fire' via a PA nursery called Asiatica which was known to make up creative names for plants. They gave it the name 'Ring of Fire' and apparently it stuck. It is believed to be a hybrid which was made by a gentleman named Keith Henderson. He used Philodendron tortum ( kind of rare and expensive nowadays) as the pollen parent and Philodendron wendlandii (ditto the expense) as the ovule parent. It was originally called Henderson's Pride. What I am not certain of is whether Henderson ever patented the plant under that name, and if he didn't, its likely it got one-upped from him and when renamed Ring of Fire that name stuck . For stuff like this, its my understanding that if you have something unique and unusual and don't patent it, and it gets introduced on a more widely spread basis, even if you are the one who crossed it, someone else can patent it.

Oh my, 💚 that is such a lovely site! Are they expensive? I hope we see them for sale here in the U.S. in the near future because if they aren't too costly, I'd surely purchase one. Green Grin!

Sue, you can submit a proposal to add it to the database since it's not there yet; it probably just hasn't been added as yet because it's a rarity here and maybe people haven't heard of it.

WOW. Maybe we will get them here. Obviously someone is tissue culturing them for mass market sale.
Natural Selections Exotics in Ft. Lauderdale has had this for sale for a long time but its an expensive buy from them. I think $75. I think that Brian's Botanicals has offered it in the past.

Another unusual plant that needs to be added to the database is Philodendron Florida Ghost. Its been around long enough now it should be in there.

If its not to much $$$ I would grab that Sue!

I'll submit a proposal to add both if someone hasn't already done so.

I looked, Brian is not currently offering it, NSE has it listed at $69 but she sells nothing almost from the website during the season because eBay is so much more lucrative for her.

Thanks Lin, I hesitated to ask for it to be added as I couldn't find many links to add for the moderator.

I don't have room in my small apartment for any more houseplants unfortunately, and not for one which could grow big. They were $85 which is also way out of my budget.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

To day is a holliday so I can sneak to the abandoned garden after seing this post... wondering are they still there?..
Hey...There is still one survive, but so small. It almost lost the variegation...think I'try to revive it

$85?????? Ugh. I wonder if Barry Yinger, the guy who owned Asiatica, is still around. Asiatica closed in I think 2010 at a time when so many smaller and mom and pop nurseries were closing in the wake of the 2008 financial downturn. I ordered a few plants from Asiatica in my day, I am sure other people somewhere on this site did as well, he specialized in rare difficult to locate plants. Your $85 makes NSE's $69 look better but not good enough LOL

Cowell's plants most likely come from a supplier in the Netherlands.

I just got an email that this place is selling. They have some incredible plants, and pretty high prices. Have you purchased from them, Gina?

Karen I have not. And probably wouldn't...they are really extravagantly expensive. I'd have to be able to go there and see the plants offered beforehand and they don;t allow visitors, a friend and I have checked LOL

Thinking Only two people managing 84 acres and 500,000 plants??? Shrug! Have to say they do have some interesting material but I too prefer to see what I am getting - up close and personal.

Alice I agree. Especially for the prices they are asking. I have a lot of the plants that they sell. One in particular that they have listed now for $119 I got for free as a trade plant in the early 2000's.
Trading is the way to go, not buying retail. Anyone interested in accumulating any of the more unusual species and hybrids of aroids in particular need to become involved in places where that group of folks mingles. That would not b there...no one on NGA is seemingly interested in the aroid forum here. Although I did have a lady courting me by tree mail for about 2 weeks trying to get me to trade her rare plants for pretty common ones then saying goodbye so long when I declined.
The International Aroid Show and Sale is this weekend in Miami, I have a friend from here leaving today to go down, he has my wish list, if he sees something I can afford (they are usually very reasonable at the actual sale, its more for members of the IAS, but the auction can get pricey). SO I may pick up some cool new stuff this weekend. He has a lot more freedom than I do to go on trips and see old friends down South who are collectors and swap plants so I always get on the receiving end of that too. But I set up my own trades with folks and have gotten a lot of cool stuff over the years, and recently as well.
