It seems like a gamble to use it without digging out the clump so you can see the roots when you are dividing. I guess it depends on the situation and the user's priorities. But if it's finally time to clean up a 100+ fan clump of Ice Carnival that hasn't been touched since 1978, maybe you put a different value on damage vs. time.
