Hi Everybody hope your 2020 is off to a great start I am finally getting some downtime and have the next few weeks to relax and enjoy some vacation time from work so wanted to share some of the pictures I took from the springtime visiting friends on the West Coast.
Looking back through the pictures it really was a wonderful season I was once again shocked at there new creations and amazed at the beauty they created. I have been visiting Joe Ghio for some years now and he had an incredible bloom season the best I have ever seen there everything just looked perfect ! and as a bonus was able to visit Bill Maryott and get a tour of his seedlings for those who grow Daylilies I have a treat for you
Oregon was much the same the Keppel garden was full of Outstanding Plicata's and unique flowers and Mid America was just gorgeous Thomas and Paul have so many fun projects and the colors they are getting was shocking we in the Iris world have many good good things to look forward to in the future
Will start with the new Ghio Intro's for 2020 they are now being Introduced through Schreiner's and from what I understand they ship overseas for those on here in different countries. Joe will still be hybridizing but the new intro's will come from Schreiner's. Looking back I thought his 2019's were some of the best he has released but this group is wonderful. I have been pushing for some of these for years not that I could sway him one way or another but I certainly tried to point out a few of these while I visited.
Band Together.. If I was giving away awards for best yellow seedling this one would have got it hands down last year a must have and should go on to win lots of awards perfect in form, stems, and stunning in a clump.
Necklace.. The color.. the ruffles.. the stems a Ghio Special ! This is another one that will be popular what a color.
Magical Powers..One I have been drooling over for years really stands out.. even in a garden full of wonderful Pinks this one has stopped me over and over again to admire it excited to finally be able to grow it at home and work with it. Note the form of it and the Pink Hafts you will take notice of this one when it blooms
Case In Point..Joe has told me for years some of the best have unknown pedigrees and this is a perfect example of it he has some really fun Plicata's coming down the pipeline and this one is exciting has the Ghio Form and the wide overlapping falls, stems to go with it and loaded with flowers look at the clump effect
Playacting..If your looking for Color Impact in the garden look no further this one was exceptional this year the silver/bluish sheen on the falls with those bright beards really make it pop.
High Surf.. Loved the name and the flower he has had a number of good things in this color range this one is a step above them all for flower form I am always looking for late bloomers to extend the season and this is one of those very interesting pedigree another one I want to see what else comes next from the genes.
Romantic Lead..The latest from the pink lines just look at those ruffles and the stems another one that is a late bloomer Outstanding !! It will be on my order form.
Cabana..The 1st of hopefully many more new Oranges coming from Joe he has some beautiful seedlings in all kinds of different shades this particular one has been a favorite of my Dad we are both looking forward to growing it.
Beyond The Rainbow..A perfect name for this one a very unique color you can see why Joe was excited about it there is nothing else like it love the color show this one puts on when the sun hits it and then as it starts to age so many different shades of color show up on the falls.
Funhouse..One for the front of the garden and very bright the color really pops in the sun it was just coming on as I was leaving this year but Joe's Facebook page has a clump shot of it a mass of flowers
Tightrope..an early Border Bearded that has exceptional form and stems this one will earn a spot front row in the garden it is the latest of his banded creations
Super bunch of introductions! So nice to see the big ruffly orange ones. I'm sure they will make a hit. Those pinks are going to be popular too I'm guessing. Band Together is so bright and that form Also love Necklace, those ruffles and that white wash in the falls ending in dark ruffles. All winners I'm thinking.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.
All of them are gorgeous, but I need to have Magical Powers in my yard! If I had Magical Powers I could just wave the magic wand and all these would be here too; Cabana, Funhouse, Beyond the Rainbow, Romantic Lead, High Surf, Playacting, Case in Point, Neckless, Band Together, and Tightrope.
Edit for spelling

Just beautiful Brad. I have been out drooling over them on Shreiners. But I had overlooked Playacting. Your group shot really captured its specialness.
If you think there is no more beauty left in the world...Plant a garden!!!
Thanks Everybody Joe had a great season and excited these are now available something for everyone in this group !
Tom.. I thought the same thing those 2 planted together would be a show ! If your looking for a yellow it is the one to get the beards up close in the garden really make it look complete.
Les.. Agreed the Pink hafts on it will make you keep coming back to look at it have been waiting on this one for years too Joe has many wonderful pinks in all kinds of shades but this one is special.
Tightrope was very good ! love his work the past couple years with BB's with the crazy winds we get in the spring at home I prefer things on the shorter side.
Barbara.. Thanks for the laugh I need that wand too ! The whole group is amazing this year
Elsa.. You won't miss a clump of that one in the garden the beards really make it against that color on the falls glad he gave it a name
Valeria.. Welcome to the Iris Forum and Thank You ! I took lot's of pictures on the trip this year have a lot to share from Santa Cruz and Salem.
I wanted to share some of the updated pictures from Joe's 2019 intro's before we moved on to seedlings they were phenomnal this year so many good ones to pick from here I had a hard time choosing what to order will eventually have to get them all. I believe Mid America has all of them available if you happened to miss out on them last year.
Thread The Needle.. Loved the form on this one and the size it blooms lower so perfect for the front of my garden excited to see what the next generation will bring from it would love to start getting this form in more Plicata's hoping it will pass those wide falls and ruffles onto it's kids.
Santa Cruz Surf.. Another one I did my best to point out every year and convince Joe it needed a name very good garden impact beautiful stems and gorgeous in a clump it's on the list to work with in the spring.
Share The Love.. I have had a few good ones in this color range but nothing quite like this one it gets a 10/10 gorgeous flowers and wide falls very intense color close up and look what it does in a clump WOW !
Musicality.. My favorite of them all nothing else like it shows what's possible in form for the future and one I am thrilled to have at home for the spring to work with an exceptional Iris ! If you didn't get this one last year it is a must have ! Hoping we will have all kinds of colors and patterns with this form in the coming years Thanks to Joe's work !
Looking Cute.. This one really put on a show this year note the last picture of the row of it lined out everyone of them show stems I kept going back to it over and over again and telling him how much I liked it.
Powerhouse.. This one blooms on the late side very neat color and another for the front of the garden. Hoping to see more of it in the spring.
Heavenly Sign.. You can see from the pictures why it was selected very pretty color with matching hafts and show branching another Ghio special was told it was a very good parent as well for those who like to Pollen Daub.
Center Of The Universe..won't need a name tag for this one it really jumps out at you very cool flower it will be a hit all over the country once it gets out there.
Hat In The Ring.. Love Joe's Band's this one was on my order list have liked it for years.
Unfolding Dreams.. Very late bloomer it had 1 flower opening while I was there so pictures are from 2018 loved the color in it there were stalks showing everywhere as I was leaving. Hope to catch more pictures this coming May of it.
Supercharged.. My favorite of the Variegata's currently available very beautiful when lit up in the sun the red really pops in the falls you won't miss it in the garden looks like an amazing grower too should bring on instant clumps.
Clear Conscience.. This one was a 2018 intro but wanted to share the pictures of it was my most popular one of Joes at home the visitors raved over this one needs to be seen up close in the garden to really appreciate the impact just a masterpiece of color and form.I have some fun things at home but this one was special this year even the frogs were in awe of this one this guy made it his home for a couple days until I made him move as the flower was closing and I wanted my pod to set and as a bonus it is extremely fertile and will set pods everything I touched with it's pollen took this year.
They are all so amazing, I just have to find a way to visit the coast during bloom season one of these years. As usual your pictures are great, and the one with the tree frog is too cute.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.
Clear Conscience sure keeps it's form as it ages! Or at least in your pictures. And yep, Center of The Universe is my kind of iris. Though the soft coloring of Santa Cruz Surf has me hooked too.
