So, I bought these seeds online and they arrived with the following instructions. I have a heat mat to keep them warm but I don't think I can provide the cool temps that it advises. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Oh my! I have never heard of anyone that I know growing Musa from seed! What an adventure. I have had bananas like Musa velutina self seed before. The seeds are very large and they have gone on the ground from old fruit and sprouted by themselves. But I have not tried to grow Musa from seed....I would be interested in following your adventure

Ha, when I saw your name at the top of the reply I thought, right, Gina's going to tell me exactly what to do! Your response doesn't fill me with much hope for success with my adventure but I will surely keep you posted Smiling The seeds are currently soaking in a little pot of water here...I just need to figure out how to give them the temperature extremes once they're potted up!

Those directions sound hokey to me. Like Gina, I have had the M.velutina self seed and obviously temperature management was not necessary. Why don't you ask on bananas.org, surely you will get an informed answer there. http://www.bananas.org/

I agree with ardesia 100% I've been a member of banana.org for over 10 years, they will be a big help to you, I remember with my seeds the hardest part was scarifying (nicking) the seeds. Good luck, keep us posted

I gave up growing bananas (other than the M velutina which took care of itself) a number of years ago so I stopped spending much time on Banans.org. My fruiting bananas took up too much real estate and fertilizer to produce good crops on a regular basis so I offed them. Offing mature bananas is not easy. Grumbling

Thanks Christine, I did go on there when you suggested it. Found someone that has a few Sikkimensis seeds germinating. It's just so difficult to get these particular seeds on their way so I'm delighted with myself Hilarious!

Just a wee update...banana is doing well Big Grin There are 5 more on their way too and the large variation in temps really wasn't necessary!
