Since you all have scads of time, social distance, and weeds right now, you might enjoy coming up with iris names not yet claimed by the registry. So my first suggestion is "Black Hole" because this year a black hole in the universe was finally photographed. Check out the link: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/0....

What would this hypothetical iris look like? I have several thoughts. It could be a really dark black iris, any iris with a deep black center, or ... ta da a dark black iris with fall edged in yellow and/or shot through with yellow. Have any iris hybridizers ever done such a combination? I might not buy this hypothetical iris, but I would be struck by it. Well, I might buy it if someone hybridized it to meet my black hole challenge. Whistling

I would expect any iris named 'Black Hole' to be as close to a black self as possible.

If it has a yellow-orange edge, then 'Accretion Disk' would be a better name for it (since that's what you can see in the photo).

I'd love to see some irises named to honour people in this forum and I'd love to have those irises in my garden. An sdb called Granny's Garden, a green iris called Elsa's love, a pink frilly iris called Under The Sun and irises named after our usernames like Shizen, Evelyn in the Garden, Undying Light, Love My House etc.

I would totally use Undying Light as an iris name if it isn't taken....and that I actually have a seedling to introduce. I see a bright yellow iris that looks moderately like That's All Folks.

I'm not sure, is "Totally Awesome" taken as an iris name? I imagine something that's pretty wildly coloured. Reds, maybe some purplish-blue in it. Or maybe orange with a burgundy ring?

I suppose if we were feeling morbid we could name an iris "Corona Bonus". The "bonus part refers to all the extra time we have to weed our gardens. A bonus of the corona.

Just because I have goats, I would like an iris named "Scapegoat". It should be a space age iris with the cute flipped up horns. Oh and an iris named "Nannyberry Pie"

If you look closely at the photos you can see some shading/marking on the shoulders. In my photos this area looks tan but in real life it is greeeeeeeeen.. Hurray!

I have the privilege of growing this little seedling for Tom. I found it open this morning after a very hard rain. Actually I went out in the lightening and rain to get a photo of it. It was waiting for me. Smiling I hope the bloom holds up until the sun shines. I will take another photo and post it then.

Rolling on the floor laughing Tom already has names for his irises. No one tells their irises name before registration for fear it may taken and used by someone else. It does take a long time to grow them, test them and create enough of them to make registering them feasible. I hope this one continues to behave and it does get registered and distributed. I grow a lot of irises shared by others on this forum and I think it would be really fun to grow ones created by others on this forum. Thumbs up Ok, everyone, get busy. Whistling Hilarious!

I would love to introduce irises one day....but first, I need to actually cross irises.

I know it takes a loooong time for a cross to become an intro. Do hybridizers cross irises, and then self pollinate in about 2-3 years, to grow bunches of the same flower?

No--self pollination will *not* yield the same flower--the only way to get enough clones is to propagate them over time.
