Irises
Greetings to all! I have this year bloomed the first seedlings from the pollinations of 2018. I decided to create a separate branch to show some of them. I didn't have any special goals or strategies at that time, and I often crossed the two flowers closest to each other, since this was my first experience. It is still quite a long way from the novelties of modern hybridization, but in any case it is interesting to see how Nature mixes forms, colors, patterns in an endless kaleidoscope, and how it all manifests itself in offspring. Smiling

I'll start with the cross 18-178: Just Crazy X Mood Ring .
First photos of parents

Just Crazy. I have always loved irises with veins, so I could not leave this variety without trying to pollinate it

Mood Ring. This is an incredibly beautiful variety, in addition, the publication of Brad Collins with photos of seedlings from Mood Ring further motivated me to use this variety in many crossings, so in the future it will be found quite often

18-178A: This seedling is not distinguished by exquisite corrugation, but these veins on a Golden background looked very nice and made me keep it Rolling my eyes.

18-178B: In this class, there is a well-known unsurpassed variety of Keppel's 'Ocean Liner', although this seedling has its own differences and features.

18-178C: in this seedling, as is often the case with its parent 'Just Crazy', one of the flowers had 4 fouls instead of three. And the coloring turned out to be quite funny

I might add that the bright yellow beard on the second one is a nice difference to many of the other striped blue irises.

I like these two the best. And I don't think an iris must have a lot of ruffles to be pretty. Smiling

I agree also with Tom about the yellow beards on the blue one. That was the first thing I noticed! Smiling

I have not yet decided which one I will leave out of the Golden-brown ones, I will focus on the branching and the number of buds..

Keep on trying, & don't get discouraged. Some seedlings I started to grow last summer, are doing well.
While I had a large seed pod on 'Batik', this summer, but it failed to produce even one single seed !

Sergio, I like 18-188A.Pretty color I think.
On the golden browns,I liked the last from a distance color wise, but I enlarged and looked at them both close up ,and I like the 1st's overall veining on the falls better.

18-188A is somewhat unique in that it is a dark top, but it also has the haft marks. Purple top, pink bottom makes for a nice bloom. If it has good branching and bud count, that makes it even better. Smiling

Irises
Shawn, I've had a few of these empty pods on arilbreds and on MDB Line Drive this year (but this is a fairly common case for these classes of irises..)

Jan .. thanks. This year, about 500 seedlings bloomed, and the same number for some reason did not begin to bloom yet (some of them were exposed to late frosts). From the 2019 crosses, I have about 1300 seedlings growing. I hope there is a lot of interesting things ahead)

Derylin and Tom.. thank you for your positive assessment, I appreciate Your opinion

another pink seedling (the color is typical pink), with a fairly wide flower shape, which I left until next year, turned out to be from a cross - 18-444 That's All Folks X unknown

Irises
thank you all for your comments, your opinion will be taken into account by me when choosing (provided that other factors are equal Smiling )

The following cross 18-239: Montmartre X Secret Recipe
I must say that we have had abnormal weather in the South of Russia this year. in March it was 86 °F, and in April, when the foliage was already large, there were frosts (24°F). many varieties had damaged stems, were short or deformed, and often had empty buds.
Most of the seedlings from this cross had a short stalk. This may be a genetic defect, since Secret Recipe also has a short stem. Or maybe it is the negative impact of late frosts and spring droughts. So this season I did not reject these seedlings due to their growth and branching and decided to wait another year.

I think I like G the best, I like the bright yellow hafts and beards on the otherwise very dark luminata.

It is very hard to select seedlings when the weather has affected them. I guess the only way to do that is to give them another year if you like the bloom.
