Hello All,

Are you ordering any bulbs this Autumn? I'm afraid I went overboard; however, I'm trying to fill in a large existing space and have a new space plus I want some for vases. For jonquils, I order mixtures but am splurging on a few pricey ones this year with large flowers. I was so pleased with the giant alliums this past Spring, I ordered quite a few again.

Where do you order your bulbs? Are you trying anything new? Smiling

I am very proud of myself -- I placed my bulb orders this morning. I usually forget to do it until many of the varieties are sold out!

I ordered from Scheepers, Bluestone Perennials, K. van Bourgondien (dutchbulbs), Easy to Grow Bulbs, and Dutchgrown Bulbs. This is my first time ordering from Dutchgrown, so We Shall See how they turn out!

And yes, always gotta try new stuff!

We plant about 1200 bulbs each year. Mostly tulips as Other species like daffodils, fritillaries, alliums, etc.have established themselves.

About thirds of our tulips are used as annuals. 95% are from the box stores. We can get early, mid and late Spring bloomers. No issue in getting the general types such as early blooming doubles, fringes, parrots, etc.

We get a couple of packs of tulips from garden centres just to try something different however, once Spring arrives, we prefer blasts of colour to more subtle displays.

Nice selection. I'll have to research those gladiolus a
and give them a try.

Re Foxtail Lily. One of our favourites.
I have grown it for 35 years. Perhaps 25% success when planted in the ground. 100% success planted in a container and overwintered in our unheated garage then placed outside in Early Spring. We put about 5 in a 5 gallon container. After they are finished I bury them in the ground and then dig them up and repot early September.

I've been drooling at Eremurus this year -- but we have very wet winters. I do most of my gardening in containers, though, so I've been thinking about doing the stick-the-pot-under-something trick. Thanks for relating your experience, Wildalpine!

I'm digging deep for the Eremurus bulbs (foxtail lilies), placing some chipped marble gravel in the bottom of the hole, followed by grit above that, followed by soil amended with peat moss to keep it light.

Good luck with them! We get a good bit more rain and less snow than you guys do, so I hope you have better luck up there than I suspect I would down here!

I'm enjoying everyone's posts. Thank you! Hurray!

My bulbs have arrived. I started planting tonight. So glad I'm trying a few new ones. This should be my last year for narcissus—final 200 for front beds. I'm adding a lot of tulips this year and can't wait to see those. I was very pleased with the giant alliums last year. They lasted forever and I ordered more.

I've never grown Ixia, but the only trouble I've ever had with crocus is when squirrels or voles dig them up and eat them! They are pretty tough suckers otherwise.

These days I am only planting "tommies" -- the crocus species tommasinianus. They are supposed to not be as appealing to the critters as the other crocuses. Unfortunately, they don't come in a wide variety of colors -- but they're still crocus!

Fortunately I live in a building on the top floor. Could crocus have trouble with high sun and heat?

They will be dormant during the hottest/sunniest parts of the year, so as long as you don't let them completely dessicate, they shouldn't care. Just water the pots whenever you water other pots (probably more than cactus Smiling ). And make sure they get some chill during the winter -- just leave the pots out on your balcony all winter.

They are going to be watered the same way muscari was watered- spillage and leakage of adenium , pachypodium and euphorbia pots...

I've always appreciated the common daffodil; however, it has never been a big focus of mine. But I have to admit that I find the more unusual daffodils very intriguing. So while looking up some cultural information on my previous Brent & Becky's order, I couldn't help but place a second order for the following:

Narcissus - Bridal Crown

@mike - That is a beautiful selection. I just wanted to mention I grew Manly before and a few other doubles from B&B. They needed support.
