I know we're still a day or so away, but I want to kick 2020 to the curb and look ahead! Thumbs up

In home Depot this morning to pick up a can of stain and some foam brushes, so I stopped at the seed racks, and picked up some more packets!

-Genovese Basil
-Big Italy Parsley
-California Wonder Bell peppers
-Shishito Peppers
-Copenhagen Market Early Cabbage
-Early Acorn Squash
-Sierra Gold Cantalope
-Black Beauty Eggplant
-Flavor King Bunching Onions
-Early Girl Tomatoes
-Early Treat Tomatoes
-Super Beefsteak Tomatoes
-Gardener's Delight Cherry Tomatoes
-San Marzano Tomatoes

Make sure you get your seeds early this year. I have been reading with Covid most places might run out early since so many more folkis are planting vegetables.

I also am on the search for Pro-Mix Premium Organic Seed Starting Mix, 16 qt. The online store I bought it from last year is out and doesn't know if it will be getting it back in. I found it on Greenhouse Megastore, but it's nearly $6 more a bag. If I buy 5 bags, I can get free shipping. I have them in my cart. Just need to pull the trigger. Need to check and see what else I usually order from GMS and if I have enough, so I get everything at once with the free shipping.

Bring on the 2021 harvest!

Just purchased a HarvestRight Home Freeze Dryer. It sure will come in handy at harvest time, but I anticipate using it on a regular basis.

You can freeze-dry almost anything. All kinds of fruits, vegetables and meats, and they keep their original flavor. That includes things like tomatoes, apples, bananas, strawberries, peaches, green beans, peppers, onions, potatoes, spinach, shrimp, pork, beef, turkey and even ice cream. Meals that include meat can be freeze dried. Foods like lasagna, rice dishes, cheese macaroni, chili, beef stew, chicken a la king, casseroles, shrimp, lobster, pulled pork, pasta sauces or scrambled eggs are perfect for this process. Unlike canning and other ways of preserving food, freeze drying causes very little damage to the nutritional value of your food. Freeze-dried foods retain around 97% of the nutrients, dehydrated 60%, and canned 40%, and the shelf life is far beyond canned, frozen and dehydrated foods. The food also retains it's original look and texture once rehydrated.

Me neither. I had no idea there were such things as freeze driers to be had.

Hurray for 2021. Not going to miss 2020.

I was quite impressed with it once I started reading up on it and watching YouTube videos. I always thought of freeze dried foods like those survival foods you see advertised. I joined a freeze dryer group on FB, and I can't believe what I am seeing people freeze dry, and how it looks so delicious once rehydrated, like it was just bought and cooked.

The freeze dryer won't arrive for 10 weeks at the earliest (mid March). The company is so backed up with orders since the beginning of Covid-19 with more and more folks concerned about food supplies, storage and preservation.

We will use it for our harvest instead of giving so much away and composting what we can't eat/giveaway. (Might be a good excuse to plant more! nodding ) We will also use it to buy fresh fruits and veggies we don't grow so we can have them all year. It will also be useful when we find a good sale on something that we like to eat. No more freezing things that don't taste as well when un-defrosted and have to be eaten before they get freezer burn or have been in the freezer too long.

So true...I hate to keep things in the freezer for very long, they look & taste unappetizing....

So finished my seed ordering. At least I think so. Already have many seeds but today went and ordered at Totally Tomatoes. Spent 69.00 plus shipping and tax. On tomatoes I ordered-
Better Boy
Mountain Magic
Perfect Flame
Early Choice Black
SummerPick
Bella Rosa
Chefs Choice Red
Chefs Choice Black
Chefs Choice Stripes

I also ordered Fairy Tale and Patio Baby eggplant seeds. Lola and Sweet Cayenne Pepper seeds. And a bunch of cucumber seeds.

I should have a great garden this year. Last Fall put on lots of compost so the plants should do really well.

Yup, everyone needs to get their seeds early if they want to have their pick!

That's a lot of tomatoes, Rita. How many of each do you usually plant?

Thinking of growing just two peppers this year: California Wonder Bells and Shishito. These are the two we use the most. I will probably plant more of each. Going to try and freeze dry some of them so we'll have them next winter.

Yes, lots of tomato seeds. And I already had both leftover tomato seeds from past years plus I have lots of tomato seeds of new to me varieties already because this Fall I had ordered from both SeedsNSuch and APWhalley. Got fancy Cream Of The Crop Series from Whalley and mostly deterimate types from SeedsNSuch.

So I forgot to add that I bought Mountain Magic because of your recommendation!!

Tomato seeds seem to last forever so I don't mind buying way more than I need. Many of these will be two or three plants of each variety.

I used to do rows of 6 of one variety but these days want to grow so many varieties that I go for more variety.

If I remember correctly, tomato seeds stay viable for 4-7 years.

I have grown ten year old seed and every one came up. Tomato seeds are good for a really long time.

I guess...under the right conditions. How did you store them? I've never read of 10 year old tomato seeds growing, but yours are proof it can be done.

About 5 years ago, I bought an order of "survival seeds", everything necessary if the SHTF. They are packed in vacuum mylar bags and I have them stored in my chest freezer in the cellar at 0 degrees. Supposedly, they will last indefinitely.

I did nothing. I stored them in the original package with a bunch of other seeds sitting on my side desk over there. So sitting at room temperature for ten years.

I am not advocating for keeping tomato seeds for ten years but know that I don't need to be concerned that those will go bad too quickly. Okay that I have seeds for multi years.

On my pepper, eggplant and cucumber seeds those are good for two years. Use them up quickly or they go bad.

Good to know that tomato seeds are so long-lasting.....I'm hoping to buy my plants this year...last year's plants that I grew were awful.....tomatoes were like sour purple golf balls! I know it was the variety, but I don't think the plants got enough heat while growing in the house.....I have no south windows!

Well, it is easier just to buy them.
