The winters can be very mild here, so I rarely see blooms.

Ay-yup, I can generally get one, possibly two blooms off mine, but never have had more than that. Wonder if I piled shaved ice around it through most of the winter I would get more? nodding There was a DGer out of Fort Worth who had dozens of peonies and, for some reason, his bloomed well every year. Dunno...but I keep trying.

I haven't seen blooms on mine in 3 years lol. Someone else had mentioned piling ice on peonies, so I may try that this year. I have mine growing in a container, thinking that would help it get enough chilling hours. My friend lives in Allen and hers bloom every year. I got my peonies from her and she only lives 15 mins away from me. The year before mine produced buds but they never opened. Last Spring my peony didn't bother with flowerbuds lol.

One of the instructions I saw for warm area peonies is to make sure there is little to no mulch around the base to help along the cold requirements.

I have a couple of in ground peonies and both are covered in several inches of leaves. Do you think I should remove the leaves?

I'd try it. Don't think it will hurt them in winter. Put it back on for the summer, though, around here. Hilarious!

Thanks for that link. I'll remove the leaves tomorrow. I went outside earlier and found one peony sprout.

I went ahead and removed the leaves. I found one peony but I couldn't find the other lol. Unfortunately the one I found decided to grow closer to the prickly pear.

I originally had them near the lawn and when grass grew between them, I couldn't pull it out. I ended up getting a shovel and scooping it up and throwing it in random places in a couple of flowerbeds. I mistakenly put it near my peonies. I would hate to get rid of them because of their drought tolerance but I may just throw them into a compost heap lol.

Will say that the flowers are lovely, but the only prickly plant I want anywhere near my yard are the roses. Hilarious!

I have several prickly plants including my Euphorbia plants. I hate moving them because both are heavy and tall plants and I always manage to get spines in my hands lol.
