Yes, I cannot wait to see yours Lynn! And everybody else's too! I wonder what they're going to do colourwise this coming year. To be honest though, I don't expect much change till the year after, when they've settled.xx

Very nice Pia! How fun - and whew, what a job it was satisfying the "mob" ! I'll take some photos with my camera today (usually I use my phone, but I think camera is better)

Hi! I hope you don't mind me joining the semp seed party! My grandfather always had pots of semps in his garden, I remember him telling me that a bird/the wind had dropped a seed and it grew into his first plant quite by accident, he potted it up they have been in the garden in varying numbers ever since! As a child I can remember spending many happy hours trying to count the many many rosettes in each of his pots. He passes away 2 years ago and I never thought to ask what they were called, untill I happened upon some pictures online yesterday when looking for succulent seeds. I tried growing cacti this time last year and ended up with more seedlings than I knew what to do with (the cat on the other hand managed to upset half my crop which helped with numbers ) Then just before Chistmas I saw beautiful pics of aloe polyphylla's and couldn't reasist the spiral so had to order some seeds along with some lithops seeds. Then, as I said, I was browsing the web yesterday afternoon and came across some of my Grandad's favourites and couldn't resist a packet of 200 seeds! A little more googling lead me to this thread and all your wonderful pictures documenting semp seed growth. You all have such beautiful collections!!! Anyway, that turned into more of an intro than I meant it to! I'm hoping that my seeds will be here Monday orr Tuesday so I can mae a start on my own little semp colony. Did you put your seeds inthe fridge/freezer for a time before you planted them? Has anyone used a heated propergator to set them off? I'm in the UK so I'm not sure if our temps would be adequate at this time of year just to put them in a baggie, but I don't want to coook them in the propergator either.....

Kate. We are so glad you found us. We would love it if you joined us. The more the merrier.

We have several people that have started sempervivum from seeds. My only experience with growing by seed are the ones that self sow out in my beds. The seeds go through a natural cold cycle and warming cycle provided by mother nature.
I don't think I would use a heated propagator. Much of the time the seeds have already been chilled before sending out. But you could put them in your freezer for a week and then plant them. Your house should provide all the heat they will need.

Pia had wonderful results starting her seeds. When she gets back she will share how she did it.

Welcome Kate! Another "brit" (Pia is in England) I have wanted to try seeds but haven't yet, I joined "All things plants" back in November and have had such fun, and learning too! And its given me the "go ahead" on getting more semps (and keeping the labels on them this time!) so beginning in November I've more than doubled my semp "collection"! It was really meant to be just a part of my garden and now my garden is a part of the semps
Clint - most of my semps are seedlings, and some are really small, although in the photos they all look large enough - if you notice the dirt particles are showing up as if its huge So after yesterday's chat, I'm excited to see what changes happen as they grow!

Although semps should put out plenty of young ones before they croak! When I received my first semp batch last May, several of those flowered in the summer, so I lost them, because they didn't have time to be putting out babies cycle of life I guess!

Maybe the difference in hands maybe they lack the traces of hormones required for plants to put out babies or maybe you don't sing the lullabies required to put them into a conducive mood .
