I LOVE when in this area in early spring, red, yellow and white clover are blooming with bluish-purple spiderwort.

And I loved fall in OH when goldenrod, ironweed, and joe pye were blooming together.

What "natural plantings" catch your eye?

Oh, for me that would have to be Texas Bluebonnets and Indian Paint Brush in late March until about mid-April when the state is just covered with bluebonnets (when weather is just right). I have Paint Brush on our cabin property, but no Bluebonnets.

This week the wild Ipomopsis rubra (standing cypress), Red Blanket Flowers and orange Trumpet Vine are dominating our county road and the pastures in the area. The guy across the road from us in Gause has it all along his fenceline. I should have taken a picture of it today when we were down there! Instead: https://search.brave.com/image...

Both of those sound so beautiful! I've never seen Ipomopsis that I'm aware. Maybe soon though! We will be driving through TX this weekend, and again next weekend. If I see some, now I'll know what they are. : ) !

Oh, how I love the sumac leaf color in the fall @crawgarden. There are a couple very large specimens (over 10' tall now) of Staghorn Sumac along the access lane onto our rural property. They actually sit on our neighbor's parcel of land, but are in clear view of our drive onto our property, so we get to enjoy the color. They are covered with huge seed recemes. They say you can make a sort of pink lemonade drink from the seeds although I haven't tried that yet however. Pictures of them I took a couple years ago:

not a combo, but the mullein is spiking up all over and they seem to add an exotic feel to the roadsides

Fall is when I think of wild combos- like Tiffany said, large open, non-woody, areas become a tapestry of flower and foliage.
Otherwise, there is so much green between flowers, or when there ARE flowers they are in a swatch, I cannot think of a combo.

Maybe you could say our spring yard, since we don't use herbicide, is a nice combo, I like the tapestry of different shades of green plus some flowers (all non-native I suppose) before crabgrass takes over.
Plant it and they will come.

Our "lawn" has tons of flowers too, but most of them are too small to put on a good show. I was just about to take pics of the stunning display across the street but it got mowed. Not even sure what-all was over there but I was really enjoying looking at it.

I missed taking pics this spring of one of my fav roadside combos of red, white, & yellow clover blooming with Verbena (Glandularia).

Are dandelions considered to be wildflowers? Because if so, they grow like crazy over here! And to me, they look extremely pretty with their yellow dotting the green grass; almost like stars!

Yes, any plant that put itself where it is growing is a wildflower, IMVHO.

The other day as I was driving I noticed the Rugosa roses were draping along the fences with the Trumpet flowers. Odd combo, but one of my favorites!

I'm with you, Abigail, love seeing the dandelions along the roads or in abandoned fields. Lovey dubby

I noticed some Very unmowed shoulders near me looking lovely today. I hope they stay that way! I just cant see why so much of road shoulder needs to be mowed.
Plant it and they will come.

It's like they say about the sound of running water and beavers...

Around here... The minute the side of the road starts to colour up?

Expect the mowing crew to turn those pretty colours into brown stubble!

We have large patches of Helianthus angustifolius... But... the minute any of them start to open... someone down at DOT sends out the tractor crews.

Common sense should tell them to wait for a month or two.

I don't know but we have it growing here too. The honey bees and other little pollinators are always all over it. The good thing is, after you cut it, it only takes a few days before it's blooming again. Dh always leaves a patch somewhere for the bees when he mows.

I also leave the clover for the small blue butterflies (azures)
I think it may be a host plant, although I have never seen a caterpillar on the clover.

A quick google tells me white clover is native to Europe.. just as are honeybees.
Plant it and they will come.
