I happened to look out the window at my heuchera garden the other day, and this scene just struck me as funny! My husband thought it looked like a little cemetary. Hilarious! Thumb of 2013-02-27/goldfinch4/efa735

The last couple of weeks we have been having snow and ice at night and freezing rain during the day so what is out there has turned into thick ice.

I hate freezing rain, I prefer the snow to that.

Stay warm and safe Bob. What does that do to the garden?

For Heuchera you have to worry about frost heaving. When they are in ice like this you can not replant right away. My main plants are Heuchera , Hellebore and Echinacea. None of these like wet feet and being wet to long causes crown rot. When the ground is frozen the water just sits on top and freezes. So if the plants live all the leaves on the Heuchera get messed up and need to be removed.

So they will come back from the roots/stems?

As you can tell I am really new the Heuchera. I got about 6 of them late last summer.

When do I need to do surgery?

Chris - I agree with your husband. Isn't that Dr. Shock behind the tree?

Marilyn, Almost all of my heux in zone 7A have heaved from the frost thaw cycle, and it's pretty common. I wait until after our last frost date and lift them, remove dead leaves and replant. The heux in pots and planters have not heaved and I assume it's because of the lighter soil and drainage holes, but don't know.

I always thought the heaving was from the constant freezing and thawing of the ground- I had not really thought about different soils having a hand at that - you may be closer to the truth than I am. I'm all ears!

Thanks all.

That sure sounds nasty Bob. We've had our share of freezing rain this year too. It's really hard on my sempervivum because they end up just rotting. With my heuchera I lose nearly all of the leaves every winter as it is. This year I have the rabbits helping too. Grumbling

Are you getting a snowstorm out east again today? I think ours from yesterday was heading that way.
