Sempervivum 101

By valleylynn
November 27, 2016

Sempervivums are plants that originate on the European continent. Found at high altitudes known as alpine zones, they thrive in this harsh and rugged terrain. Sempervivums are becoming increasingly popular in the United States as gardeners fall in love with the textures and colors of these amazing little plants.

Thank you Anna. It is sure easy to become addicted to them. Did you click on the photos to see the naming of some of the attributes of the rosettes and blooms?

Oh, Lynn! It must have been so hard to look out onto all your beds (how many beds do you have?) and decide which was going to have their picture featured in your article.... Drooling
Great choices; the pictures alone were worth many thousand words. Oh, your words were good too... Hilarious!
To repeat one of the sayings in a Valentine card that I received from my husband: You Think Good.
Thank you much for the informative, interesting and, of course, impactful (there's that word again) article!! Smiling

Some of the heuffelii might have a sharp point at the tip of each leaf, but the sempervivvum and jovibarba don't.
You can see the sharp tips on some of these leaves, but it seems that they are there just part of the year, not all year.

I've never had them on the semps. Sometimes the dead/dry leaves are poky when you remove them. Nothing sharp here. Smiling

Great article, Lynn. And great pics, too!

I just got interested in Semps recently, starting my collection with Red Rubin and also "Black" (Black what I don't know, just "Black" as far as I've found out so far.)

And good to hear they cross so easily, that'll be fun when I finally see flowers!

Shoe (off to add the Semp forum to my list)
Thanks again!

Hurray! Shoe it would be most wonderful to see you in the semp forum.
S. 'Black' is a great semp with some interesting color changes. Has nice watermarkings on the leaves in summer.
