We have active threads for Aloes, Agave, Mams and Echeveria. Whilst it might be impractical to have a thread for every genus Smiling ,i do think this is a big group of plants that might be able to sustain its own discussion. This group certainly has a lot going for them in terms of size , tolerance to lower light levels and very active hybridization. I do not have many of them, but i might be persuaded to get more based on your pictures Thumbs up
here are the pics of my few plants (recently shared on the main chat forum) to kick us off.
Looking forward to your pictures and advice Smiling

Excellent..
I can foresee a lot of confusion on the ID, as there are are so many cross hybrid..
I found this link will be a good source for the ID reference, put it here as I always forget where to find it.

Will share my Haworthias later

@Kaktus
thanks for link, its a great resource. I am sure you are right about ID confusions. maybe this thread can help with some of that. I am kind of used to it from collecting aloes. Often you can only get to a 'best guess' situation , based around looking at lots of pics on the internet. Smiling

It actually looks I have a couple of older leaves that have a similar looking issue that some of Steve's plants have.... This is an old photo though, so I'd have to go look and see if it is still happening. No clue how that happened. Certainly not sun related as this has always lived under at least 50% shade cloth if not more shade.
This can go really dark, almost black in coloration.

I am really bad at keeping an eye on my Haworthias, not sure why... maybe because generally as long as I water them and do not give them too much sun, they tend to be OK, not great, I definitely have pots with significant die back, but OK in the sense that there are enough offsets to keep them going.
It is what it is!

Very nice texture on that plant. For what it's worth, that's one of the parents of Steve's Onigawara hybrid (first post, last pic). The other is nigra. I would imagine if you stress that hybrid properly, you might get some nice browns and/or purples. I would also imagine it's not a fast grower, so a nice stack of leaves might take a few years, and it might be a good idea to avoid serious stress for a while.

Steve, I created a new database entry for that cultivar and moved your image there, hope that's all good. Looks like that entry still needs to be renamed to Haworthiopsis, but we're halfway there. Rolling my eyes.

@mcvansoest, I am very sure that the turning brown color is the result of sunlight and heat. Just not sure how much is too much.

That plant sees almost no sun light, but gets warm it lives on my front porch now which is south facing, and semi enclosed so even now it still gets pretty warm and plants lower down get more sun than during the summer, because of the lower angle of the sun, but this one sits high enough on a shelf to not get the direct sun, most haworthias do not enjoy the AZ sun directly regardless of the season.

Maybe the high temperature? I have moved some of my Haworthia from the rooftop to ground floor where it will be cooler for around 1 week to 10 days now, it seems like it started to turn greener, will keep watching

@Baja_Costero
Thanks Baja fore the parentage and DB maintenance on Onigawara. I did not know koelmaniorum was a parent but it makes sense because Onigawara looks quite a bit like Kintaikyo. I thought venosa might of been involved. It seems i have better eyes for aloes that haworthia at the minute Blinking

@mcvansoest
Thanks for sharing the koelmaniorum. I have seen it mentioned in other hybrids but never seen one for sale anywhere in the UK or EU. That is a nice big plant. Must be fairly old? I too love the texture of the leaves. I was going to ask how you keep haworthia in a very hot climate but you answered that already to some degree. I assume the shade tolerance in nature comes from the fact they are either submerged completely (like the windowed types) or growing underneath other plants for protection. Do you see the respiration problem you get on aloes with the higher nighttime temps? I seemed to have stopped the leaf problem for now . Not really sure how. I have switched off one LED light on each shelf (to try to simulate winter) and increased air movement a bit

Nice plants TJoe , Tesselata is on the wish list. Just never seen a nice one for sale?

maybe how the pic is taken but that second plant looks a little low in the substrate to me. Might be a rot risk is water gets trapped at the submerged leave bases Thumbs up

Are you referring to H. Attenuata at the left side? those 2 are newly purchased, the one on the left is a bonus, without roots, have to bury deep to make it stand.

One Haworthia breeder said that the Haworthia will develop and reach their potential when they are 3 to 4 years. So we just have to buy the species that we want, find the cheapest and try to grow them until they show their best .. So go ahead and buy the tesselata Green Grin!

Ok, time for a "fashion glitter and glam make-up transformation" thing.

H. Retusa:
It started out as a dried out plant with zero roots (I forgot to water for ~3 months)

I put it in the windowbox, which has the bottom half being regular gardening soil mix, top half is gardening soil mix with 10% perlite.
After a weeek or two (I think, or maybe a month or two. They grow slowly sometimes):

And then now it is all green, chubby and juicy and putting out lots of pups.

Haworthia cymbiformis:
This one had to get some extra care from me
Started out as this cutting

I had it in the windowbox, but I had a few strands of sphagnum around it after it had a few baby roots.
After a few weeks:

And now:

I don't have 'after photo' of Mutica,
but here is a photo of when I first got it. No roots, no pups. One flower stalk though

Now, it is all chubby and has like 8 baby pups.

I keep my haworthia windowbox in an area with lightly dappled shade in the summer. Do note that in late summer I moved it to full sun for around a month or two and then I moved it in for the winter. Currently, it sits on the floor of the sunroom. It does not get a lot of light but they do not seem to mind.
