Jacki this article does a terrific job of showing just how tough sempervivum are for our Northern growers. Hope this encourages many to try this wonderful type of succulent.

Great job Jacki! Being in the UK these are one of the only outdoor succulent options for me. I can't wait to try out some topiary forms when my newly aquired plants start to produce chicks

Can Iceland and Canada send plants back and forth freely?

There are some restrictions regarding import of plants to Iceland. A health certificate is needed when buying plants from any other country for resale. But people are allowed to take with them a couple of plants for their own personal use and I see in the regulations that the same goes for sending a small plant in the mail.
Seeds and bulbs can be sent freely and I have received small seedlings in the mail without any trouble.

I received Sempervium seeds from Jonna Sudenius in Belgium and I´m very excited about what will germinate. I don´t have any semps in my garden but I have some Saxifragas and sedums, my favorit is Saxifraga cotyledon, which is a native plant, but it is rare and grows in the south-east part of the Iceland in cliffs high in the mountains below the huge glacier Vatnajokull.

I think the succulents you grow in the US and Canada are so beautiful and you I love how you display them in all kinds of containers.

Maga, I love the saxifraga. I Have several different types.
You will have so much fun growing sempervivum from seed. They are quite easy to do.
I look forward to seeing photos of your semps when they get going.
It is also very exciting to see what kinds you will get from the seed. They cross pollinate easily, creating new crosses.

I've been winter sowing seeds that I save every year from my Semps - I sold lots of them this year too. I totally recommend that you grow them, however you can get them I love Sempervivum...

My only experience so far with semps from seed is the reseeding they've done in the beds. Evidently they reseed easily.

Well my hubby is going to make me a bunch of beds as soon as it warms up so I will be adding semps into it. They can stay in the beds all winter and be ok right?

I had to laugh (well, only a little) at one gal who commented on my site; she accused me of making a mistake, and that there are only really three kinds - a red kind, a green kind and a cobweb kind, and that the only reason my plants look different is that the pictures were all taken when the plants were in different stages of dryness, I tried to be kind and pointed out that all the pictures on the page in question were taken at the same time. I don't think she believed me.
