Unseasonably warm today so I took advantage of getting the chicken coop and run cleaned up. Lots of mud in the yard from the rain and my giant dogs so all the old hay from the goats got spread around on the mud lawn. I may have to resort to some pine shavings out there too, they are like horses and we all know what a horse pen looks like!

Not used to mud season in Jan! Nicki leaves muddy pawprints all over the house... I have a towel to wipe her with, but the mud gets down deep..... Supposed to be participating in the Christmas Bird Count....so far, only 5 birds have come to the feeder!

We h ad to give up our feeder when John was no longer able to fill them. Birds will have to be satisfied with natural food off the trees.

May I suggest we DON'T start a "2022 Northeast Veggie Gardening" thread since so much gets duplicated between "Garden Talk" and the "Northeast Veggie Gardening". Just my 2 cents. Angel

I cleaned the coop and the run the other day. I made the mistake of adding new dirt to the coop which previously had a nice layer of dead grass mixed in. Within 1 day the chickens had mud all over everything. I added extra pine shaving and a layer of straw on the dirt. That seems to have helped.

We bought one of those window feeders that is clear plastic and sticks to the window with suction cups. We put it in the kitchen window above the sink. Three days, and the birds still have not discovered it.

Jim do you mean another veggie garden thread for 2022?

OOPS! Sorry, Ronnie. My bad. Yes, I say forgo a " 2022 Northeast Veggie Gardening" thread and just have the "Garden Talk 2022" thread where we put everything gardening. As I said in the earlier post, with two gardening threads, a lot gets duplicated. (Unless others disagree.)

PS - I went back and edited the earlier post to read correctly.

Figured that's what you meant Jim Smiling Good idea, I don't grow veggies like you and Rita but do like to talk about the handful I grow, so now I can keep up nodding

Likewise, I don't grow a lot of flowers, but some do. It might make it easier to share and keep tabs on what everyone is doing.

Product Recommendation

I started noticing fungus gnats on my indoor tomatoes a few weeks ago. Trying to eradicate them on the cheap, I used small pieces of yellow paper smeared with vaseline and hung them from the grow lights (read this on a website). Two weeks later, I couldn't find one bug stuck on any of these, and they were multiplying, so I started looking online for something else. I decided to take a chance on these.

I cut two of these 6 x 8 pieces into 4 pieces each and hung them from the grow lights. WOW! Within an hour, I noticed about 2 dozen gnats already stuck. They are now loaded with them, and I have not seen any more flying around when I pick tomatoes. Recommended for indoor and outdoor use.

Amazon has several brands. This one looked like one of the best bangs for the bucks and had a lot of positive reviews. It also has two little plastic soil spikes that you can use with them. 20 sheets which I'll get 80 sticky traps from if I cut them. If I use in the greenhouse, I will probably hang a few full sheets.

During December my poor roses out front were still trying to bloom. But now with the excess deep freeze we had yesterday they really are done for the season.

I have a small section in my front yard were some crazy daffodils have put up leaves. And now they froze!! Poor things must be too confused since we had warm spells in December but now it's cold in January.
