How's the problem with plant thieves? I talked to another grower, and he told me about how he couldn't grow anything that looked nice, because it would get stolen. Apparently his neighbors would go into his backyard to steal his plants.

What rudeness. I would break their arms if I caught them stealing.

Evan, stealing plants is not new, it has been going on for hundreds of years. There will always be unscrupulous people.
Not sure what the answer is to this problem.

Well, we are having another day of heavy wind and another rain front moving in. Suppose to have sunshine starting this weekend.
I managed to get one of the beds weeded yesterday. Lots of wind, but the rain held off for a couple hours. The result was a 5-gallon bucket of weeds. :hurray:
What joy it was to be working with the semps again. Now that the weeds are gone from one of the beds I hope to get some photos. What catches my attention right now is the lovely form of some of the semps.

Several years ago, in the front of the house, I had a gazania planted bed where I placed a couple of wooden stakes that my mother-in-law cut out and hand painted. She had depicted a boy and a girl holding watering cans. Within a couple of days, these stakes were stolen. The plants were still there but the stakes had sentimental worth to me. I guess temptation is really hard to resist...

Guess what I found today. Some of @Springcolor 's seeds are germinating. The weather is warming up slightly. Not exactly seedlings yet, but almost there... I hear that in the bay area, after around christmas, the weather starts warming up.

We managed to survive the holidays and the first snow of the season. I sincerely hope it is also the last snow of the season but not holding my breath. We had just under a foot of snow so not really that bad and I have a good snow vehicle which is good as each day I have to venture to an even higher elevation with even more snow to take care of my horse. But this is what it looked like at my house from Christmas to about 4 days ago.

Pretty sunny day here. FINALLY! I did get out and got some weeding done.

Most things look good despite this rain. After a drought all summer we're now 5" ahead for this rainy season and still a couple months to go. Hope tis is not the new normal!

Haven't planted any semp seed yet but the daylilies, iris and Kniphofia seed is germinating nicely.

Wow Melissa, you really have an official winter this year. That is impressive for the valleys in the PNW. That would keep your seedlings safe and happy. Is your snow gone now?

Now I need to get the other bed weeded and do set up for planting last year's semp seeds.

First leaves on the seedlings! If the germination continues the way it is, it will be free Semps for just shipping...

Yes the seeds of the fertile ones really do germinate easily, especially from bee set seed. I don't get as much seed from my hand crosses but of course I make one sweep with one type of pollen whereas the bees work them all day long with multiple pollens.

In '20, I did some "selective open pollinations" by letting the giant ones intercross and was surprised at the number of seedlings.

Some of my semps look ok and some do not. When do I know if they will recover? We have had weather swinging from 70 to the teens and twenties
