This is similar to the "grandpa" gene effect where the synthesis of something occurs at higher levels in warm temperatures than cool. So in the case of watermarks, the wax synthesis and leaf elongation genes acting better at warm than cool result in uneven wax synthesis and distribution. Some lines show this more often, especially tectorum/ wulfenii lines.
