Who all ends up being a rotter, for you? I'm wondering if Fuego is one of them that rots. I thought maybe it had gotten sunburned, but the leaves didn't dry out, they turned soft in two of three rooted chicks. Main stem seems okay, but almost all leaves are bad.

Also, the growth point of the third chick had died before it got to me. It didn't come with a rosette, although it looks like it's trying to form one now.

QUICK! DISSECT! Remove the rotting leaves (Should loosely fall off) and see if there is still stem that is not rotten! You can grow new babies from that! That pup might still not be rotted yet!!

Only pull ones that are loose or come off easily. Any stem that has brown going through the center or a ring of brown-black, or squishy, is not good. But, the pup, especially if it's on a seperate branch, might still be untouched.

All three are pups.
Here's how far it went. I may have to clip some other leaves, and the one to the left (last photo) with brown dots along it's stem looks more troubling.

If you feel so, you can behead them to check the stem. If the stem is fine, well, you'll have to root it. If it's rotted, well, you either found out a problem, or you can cut off the top and save it!

I'm going to let the Fuegos be right now. They're at a logical point to stop.
I will revaluate day by day.

How about everyone else? Any rotters in SICU after surgery?

I'm surprised someone had Fuego rot. Mine grow directly in the garden in mostly clay soil, nothing mixed in. We are getting plenty of rain this spring. Maybe it started with a fungal infection?

I would give my list of rotters but I have misplaced or lost my record book. I just bought a new one and will start over. Crying Angry

Maybe. If so, I hope it's not something that's going to get all of them!

Is the black area surface slightly sticky?
You can use some toothpicks to check it out.
Preferably the blade or knife you are using you should treat with bleach before going from plant to plant and clean the bleach before it touches another plant tissue.
Sure bleach rusts most alloys fast, some even within minutes, but better to be safe.

I sprayed my scissors with alcohol between surgeries.

I didn't feel stickiness, but I wasn't looking for anything like that. It's pretty well gone but I will check for stickiness if there are black areas in future

Is sticky black exudate a symptom of something specific that you've dealt with before, @PaleoTemp ?

Sorry, realized I just tagged the wrong person. 😜 Had to edit.

I'm so sorry that, firstly, you had a book of rotters and secondly that you've lost it and have to start over figuring out which ones they are at your house. Group hug

Oh you had me thinking I was crazy when I saw it, checked something else and came back and I was gone! I'll give my answer though: yeah, if the slugs or snails did the deed!

Thank you!! Somehow didn't realize slugs works be an issue, but we have some really pretty ones and it's about time for them to start emerging to rain terror down upon the dahlias since we took the tarps up about ten days ago.

Seeing the tender centers missing made me wonder. I get snails and they usually leave "divots" in the leaves.

Oh, I see! Well, in this case, it was I who scooped out the centers. They were dark brown cones of dead leaves. Sad
