I don't know if I'll see any Coleus this year, but I'm open to visual suggestion if I do. Is anyone ordering anything specific?

I have saved Henna over winter, and there are some other things in pots but I've lost track of which they are with the winter change of colors.

My seedling that sprouted last fall is looking peppy and ready to do great things this summer.

These are my Christmas coleus as I do not know if they are a named variety. They are from a package of mixed Giant Exhibition seeds.
I would like to grow more and will take cuttings. From Stokes seeds I obtained a package of seeds which is called Giant Exhibition Marbie.
From the description the seeds may give similar plants? We shall see.

I have finally potted up whatever coleus cuttings survived this far. I am also not completely sure which some of them are. Next year if I save any, I am going straight into pots, no water. I procrastinate too much.

An update on plant that sprouted last year. This is my 2nd-best sprout ever! That's not saying much, I've only had a few. My fav one had the biggest leaves I've ever seen on a Coleus, and they were so purple. Time for these friends to leave the potted home, part ways soon and get "jobs" in various parts of my landscape.

Looks nice and healthy. I had a few seedlings I wish I saved last fall. At the same time, I once again regret bringing in my coleus. Most didn't make it and it isn't worth the indoor plant clutter since they are easy to replace every year. I can't help myself since they are so prime right before frost. Then there is always some favorite that stops showing up.

That one is a pretty one with the pink stripe down the leaf.

I received some coleus seeds from Swallowtail Garden Seeds.

4. Wizard Velvet Red

I'll be starting them soon, when I get a little room. (Everything is so crowded already.)

I have grown coleus from cuttings, back in the 80s when I lived in an apartment, but I have never grown them from seed before. Is there anything special I need to know regarding their germination?

I just find them slow growing to start.

I've always heard don't cover them, but the only Coleus seeds that have ever sprouted "on my watch" were volunteers. Strange because I would think being outside all winter would ruin them. I've bought plenty of packs of seeds but gave up buying them years ago because none of them ever yielded a plant. I'm sure it was my error(s) but I couldn't say exactly what I did wrong.

Oh no! I bought 4 packets of coleus seeds! I hope I didn't waste my money! I could have purchased cuttings, though I probably wouldn't.

Tiny seeds do not let them dry out. Easy to germinate.

Gary ~ Thanks for the encouragement. It's been a long time since I grew them as houseplants, but occasionally over the years, I bought some for annuals in the garden or to add to color bowls. This will be the first time growing them from seed.

Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to be discouraging, just qualifying that I was passing along advice that didn't seem to help me out and that I couldn't confirm. Obviously people germinate tons of Coleus seeds every year. Just not me.

Tiffany ~ That's alright! Since I have 4 packs, and I want to grow coleus this year, without buying more plants, I will try them anyway. (As long as I don't forget about them, since I have so many others going...) They look splendid in pots and "color bowls".

I'm not sure about growing them in the ground, though they could be used as "fillers".

They won't color match in my shade garden, as I have it in primarily green, "silver" and whites. The caladium provides the white foliage. I have to learn how to save them so I don't have to buy new ones every year.

Evelyn, they aren't hard to grow. I have done it before, and it is fun. You don't know what you will get. Last year, I had self-sowers that made it to be full sized plants for some reason because in the past, the self-sown plants never had enough time to grow big. The most fun seedlings I grew were from seed collected from named cultivars. Some came pretty close to true and some were duds.
This plant I kept alive for a couple of years - Mighty Mosaic and it can be grown from seed. I am tempted to try it one day but if I find a plant again, I will buy it instead - unless the price of coleus plants keeps going up. This plant I bought on clearance for $2. It was small. This is after overwintering it for at least a year, maybe more. It is gone now.

Loretta ~ Beautiful! I'm going to give them a try. I will wait a while before I start them. It needs to get warmer and I need others to get off my gro-shelves! Hopefully I don't get too busy in spring with gardening chores. Its gonna' be crazy! I am behind already, but can do nothing about the snow except wait until the rain washes it away, and the soil dries up a little. It's gonna' be extra soggy this year.

I found a seedling in a pot that was inside for winter, but I don't remember the pot being near Coleus last year.

In a south facing window. (Did not have room under lights)
Now moved to under lights.
Right now they are barely starting to colour up.
