My Bougainville, Hawaiian Ti plants, mango tree and succulents did really well with little or no damage even if temps went as low as 31 degrees 3 nights in a row.

@sunkissed, did you have to cover this?

I noticed golden thyrialis did real well. Also hot lips salvia. Forsythia sage is another one that the cold did not hurt too much.

I covered my favorite Ti but all the unprotected ones are a mess of dead leaves. They will come back, the stems are still alive but they look terrible now.
Roses did well, nary a problem with them.
Abutilon looks great.
Salvias - not so good.
Bougainvilleas - not so good.
Cestrum - good
Bromeliads - all look good with a few fried leaves here and there.
Rex begonias - severely damaged but all are leafing out already.
Firecracker plant - fried.
Camellias - look great.
Confederate Jasmine - just planted in early Dec. Looks great.
Succulents - look great.
Crinums - look happy.

Gigi, I didn't do any protective covering of my bromeliads, all are perfectly fine, and giving me lots of blooms.

Some plants like my Brugmansia, Hamelia patens (Firebush), Red Double Layered Hibiscus, Thunbergia erecta (blue clock vine), aristatus (cat whiskers) lost leaves, but all growing back now, they do this almost every year we go into mid 30's too long.

All my crotons were uncovered and did fine, I pushed my croton Zanzibar close to the house into a corner, and it did great, even new growth. A few crotons dropped some leaves a week after, but all okay.

Many uncovered flowering plants, all fine, Pentas lanceolata, Odontonema purple, light purple and some red, Abutilon, passionvine Lady Margaret, Justicia red shrimp, Panama Rose (bush penta), dwarf powder puff bushes, all my salvia varieties did great,'Purple Majesty' and 'Red sage' are actually starting flowers and all that I just listed are flowering now. Hurray!

Alice how cold did you get up there?
I will say most my garden has oak tree covering, and on the north side a good 30 foot podocarpus hedge, which really helps. I also put beach umbrellas up around open areas with good heavy stands and that helps a lot.

All my salvias are coming back but they were damaged, I must be in a particularly cold spot. I know there are places in my neighborhood where the zerumbet gingers do fine and mine always brown off. It is always windy in my back yard which is lovely in August but it is pretty cold in January.

We got down to about 30 but for too many hours. The trees in my yard are deciduous so some filtered covering but not enough.

My garden looked horrible to me after the hurricanes and cold snaps, but I'm actually surprised how well most of it has done through it all. Things are bouncing back and blooming. I did lose 4 young Rose plants and I mean dead dead. A couple bougainvillea had to be cut down to the ground because the cattle panel arches they were growing on got bent. Lesson learned with extra support now on those and those bougainvillea are bouncing back. One of my dwarf bougainvillea looks bad right now but will bounce back and the others are blooming away. All of the hibiscus got blasted, but are coming back to life. I lost an episcia, but I should have taken it in. My begonias are fine and flowering and were left outside through it all. We lost a Canary Date Palm that was worth 20K, so that was heartbreaking because it was so old and beautiful. We also removed 2 peach trees. I'm finding in general that most things are coming back and it really was just a huge amount of debris to clean up and fencing repair. My husband lost his grill, which he has replaced.
Going forward, I'm keeping in mind that hurricanes and cold snaps are a part of life here and am not crying over any plant or garden decor losses like I would have in the past. I spent time over on the west coast south of Tampa and saw so much destruction that I am so grateful that my family, pets and home ... and cars are all fine for now.
If you asked me a month or so ago how I felt about the plants, I would say they are goners, but currently I'm watching everything coming back to life for the most part so I'm happily surprised.

@MySecretIslandGarden Group hug sorry to hear about your roses and your Canary Date Palms. Did the frost get them? It is always heartbreaking to loose plants especially expensive ones and ones that have sentimental value.

The desert roses definitely are ones that will not survive without protection winter time:
I lost this one Crying this caught me by surprise because the stem rot seems small and I thought it was just loosing leaves from being dormant.

And I am in danger of loosing this too! This is MD Addie my very first adenium and definitely a member of our family. Hoping I can revive her back, we are worried about the stem rot that has traveled to the main trunk. I cut the rot and she is currently without any dirt hoping to stop the rot from traveling.

It was the 2 hurricanes that took out one of the canary island palms and Roses. Fortunately we had 2 palms, so at least we still have the one.
Thumb of 2023-02-06/MySecretIslandGarden/a21184
The fence is 6 feet, so it gives perspective on how large the palms were/are. I love that ferns grow on them. Even when the palm is trimmed, the ferns come back and look really beautiful when it is all full and lush with them. This one was trimmed when the tree surgeon came and took down the other and you can see the ferns coming back.

Hi Phil!
Yes many of my plants had similiar leaf damage and my coleus looked completely dead. But, they are bouncing back. Even the coleus that looked really dead is now coming back to life. I've been removing the damaged leaves and everything is beginning to look healthy again.

Time to revive this thread as our cooler winter is just around the corner.

Unfortunately, these 2 adeniums didn't survive the root rot. ๐Ÿ’” Thumbs down

Surprisingly my Pink Weeping Hibiscus, Mango, Bougainvilleas, Crinum Lillies and several succulents survived our winter even if I didn't cover them. That helps with this years "limited storage" so I don't feel like I have to cram all my plants in the camping tent.

Me too, I am starting to take a photo of the plants that did well at 38 degrees and some most likely because they were protected by oak trees or mango tree:
scallop plant, the leaves for brown but they bounced back.

Surprisingly some of these succulents that were left outside did well, but I will still probably stick some cuttings in the pots that I will protect inside the camping tent just as a back up.

Gigi, there are few succulents that would be hurt by the cold. It is cold and wet soil that will do them in.

Yes, my echevaria and the soft tender leaves, also my jade get mushy with even the 38 degrees. Last year, I ran out of space to keep these succulent pots so I left them out uncovered, since I had back ups. Surprisingly these are the ones that survived outside last winter and actually tripled in size this growing season. So I am taking photos of them now, if they get lucky again this winter. These are in big pots so I could not bring them inside.

Crinums are reliably hardy here, so no problem with those. One of your succulents looks like 'Francesco Baldi' which can handle temps into the teens and stretches of 72 hours below freezing.
Graptosedum (XGraptosedum 'Francesco Baldi')
Thumb of 2024-03-01/purpleinopp/a56a76

That pot has plants that have been outside for many winters, although that particular arrangement was just put together last year and it stayed right where it was all winter, unprotected from rain. The other plants are:
Jenny's Stonecrop (Petrosedum rupestre subsp. rupestre 'Blue Spruce')
Sedum (Sedum kimnachii)
Sedum (Hylotelephium SunSparklerยฎ Firecracker)

And this which, if it is still alive, will manifest as new growth from the roots. The stem from last year is a goner. Some Sedums do that normally, so IDK if that was normal for here for that one or not.
Stonecrop (Hylotelephium spectabile 'Ayers Rock')

This pot also stayed out all winter, unprotected from rain.
Thumb of 2024-03-01/purpleinopp/29079a
Hairy Dewflower (Drosanthemum hispidum)

And this pot:
Thumb of 2024-03-01/purpleinopp/3367d6
XSedeveria 'Pink Granite'

This has also survived more than 1 winter in a pot @ my house. I had this for about a decade but it got too dry and bit the dust this past summer.
Chinese Stonecrop (Sedum tetractinum 'Coral Reef')
