Anybody else got buds they're just waiting on? Found these getting ready to open on one of my two big pots of Phaius yesterday. So glad I got busy and re-potted them after the hurricane, so they've recovered because I don't think they bloomed at all last year. (I had a rough year, health wise, that's my excuse and I'm stickin to it!)

I'm with you on the waiting game, Elaine.
Everything is taking it's sweet time this winter. If it's any consolation your Phaius is way ahead of mine.

Thanks, Ursula. I'm on the mend, but it happens very slowly to regain lost fitness when you're in your 70's. I had a mild case of pericarditis for the last 14 months now, and it is something that my doc told me will "clear up on it's own" but only since last fall have I had enough energy to get back to our regular walking routine, and felt improvements - not getting dizzy and feeling faint when I exert myself. A really annoying feeling for someone who has always been relatively strong and athletic.

Good things always seem to follow the bad ones, though - I was lucky enough to find my wonderful garden helper, Judith, who is a fellow Master Gardener and really enjoys working in my garden. I also hired new cleaning people for the house, so I am living the life, so to speak. When I have days I feel too tired, I really can just sit back and don't have to do much of anything. The garden is, as usual a great tool for keeping me active at whatever level - so some days I can just go out and spray the hose around, and use the leaf blowers. Leaving the heavy, tiring work for Judith.

The garden has never looked better, although of course she prunes too much and is too "tidy" for my taste. We compromise, and let it get more lush and messy in the summer. My anticipation for this is to finish weaning off the heart medications, and get back to being able to do whatever I want.

Glad you are feeling better Elaine. After being in a wheel chair for several months then dealing with this darn bulging disc now I can't imagine having to put up with feeling bad for as long as you have had to, it sucks and I am sick of sitting around.

The Phaius are the most frustrating plants, these buds have been ready to pop for what seems like weeks. I get up every morning hoping I will see a hint of a flower.

Hanging in there, right ?
I am sure you all have seen this meme, where the old guy sits with sloped shoulders at the examining table and the doctor tells him that those are the extra 20 years one gets by taking good care of ourselves! Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes. Smiling

Alice, any day now!

Ha, I am not too good at taking care of myself. I am clumsy and forgetful, I should have remembered that lifting heavy pots is not good for my spine.

Just went out to check on those Phaius buds, and I swear they haven't changed one bit from the pictures I posted 5 days ago. It's been pretty nice, warm weather, too!

C'mon flowers! Maybe I'll try not watering them for another couple of days, see if a bit of stress makes them come along. The second pot of Phaius is at least a week or two behind the first, buds barely showing white just yet. ARgh. Oh well, a succession of bloom is good too.

Mine are acting the same way. At this rate I'll be able to enter them in our club display at the Tampa Orchid Show next month.

Here are a couple of anticipations -
This fairly large plant is Coelogyne/Pleione grandiflora. It is sitting amongst my plants for probably 10 years or maybe even longer, I lost track. It never bloomed!!

I suspect my place is too warm, so I have started to move it out on the deck for some cooler temperatures, although I still move it inside when we have frost. Hopefully that will scare it into blooming. Otherwise I will give it away.

And this is one of those fragrant Phals I picked up at the Deep Cut OS Show the other day, 👍
