We came from here
The thread "Our Orchid blooms in April 2023 🐥" in Orchids forum
May 1.! April came and went and here we are, starting another month!
I am happy to report that my Paph Ho Chi Minh opened a nice spike. This one has two buds.

Amazingly the Paph Odette's Beauty on the left is still blooming after some weeks!!

Vanda Sansai Blue is now fully open! Talk about a gorgeous blue bloom?
Thumb of 2023-05-01/Ursula/b76c1c
And also C. Irene Finney 'Ingrid' opened all three spikes. A fourth growth got stuck in the basket. I probably have to destroy that basket to prevent a repeat.

What a gorgeous show, Ursula. Irene Finney is just magnificent, and your Appleblossom flower is exactly what I think it should look like. There are so many variations in pink and yellow of that cultivar.

Opening for me, for it's long seasonal run is Den. Maui Sparkle 'Exotic Orchids' with two spikes opening and at least two more coming along. I need a longer telephoto to get a decent picture of these, they're way up there - really need to find a way to grow this one horizontally rather than vertically as it's well over 9ft. tall now.

I think of Jim Hawk whenever I have to deal with this plant, he gave it to me originally. Just wondering if he knew how huge it would get? @hawkarica ? It's gorgeous and blooms like crazy but it's a bit of a headache to move around when I have to clean the cage, or bring orchids indoors for cold weather or a hurricane.

LOL Elaine, that reminds me of Patty hauling her long, long Vandas inside and spreading them along her sofa and other furniture.

Yeah, but the Vandas are easy because they're not so fragile, have no medium or container so they're light, and they hang. This big Den is on a 'hat rack' style hanger stand, in a 12in. basket with medium, with a pole attached to extend it upwards. The stems break really easily so they're strapped to the rack and the pole. It's an awkward beast to move, takes two of us to carry it out to the shop where there's room for it to stand tall indoors.

Thinking if we get a hurricane this summer, I'll just lay it down on the pool deck after everybody else is moved, and let it take it's chances. Maybe it will make some roots along it's stems if I lay it down - Hmmm! So far it hasn't made any roots on the canes or attempted to make keikis at the bottom either. You know how I love to propagate things . . . Rolling my eyes.

This isn't mine, but found it at one of the nurseries today. I really wanted it, but had trouble justifying the $60 purchase given my budget's pretty tight right now...
Was very pretty though.

It's a beauty, TK and don't feel bad because you, and all of us got to enjoy seeing it in your pictures. Don't know about anyone else, but I'm buying very few new plants since the prices have essentially doubled in recent years.

Retailers are very reluctant to roll back their prices, even though their costs have gone back more towards former levels. We consumers can only 'encourage' them to do so by holding back on our impulse buying of non-necessities like beautiful orchids.

Elaine, you are so right!
I have bought very little on new Orchids, since the beginning of the pandemic. What is happening around here is rows and rows of gorgeous and interesting Cacti @ Succulents at the nurseries and they are very reasonably priced. Impossible to resist. Smiling

I picked up a Sarcoglottis at EFG a few eyars ago and it promptly croaked. I suspect your GH and all that humidity will better meet its needs.

Our OCE is weighing in with two real beauties -

Thumb of 2023-05-02/Ursula/1c0a92
Bill:
For the May bloom thread complete with a fruity, grape like fragrance, this is Phalaenopsis Younghome Gold Pixie. Flowers are 2 and 5/8" and faintly spotted red towards the interior. Two inflorescences with nine flowers!

I love the pretty pattern on this one 💕
Thumb of 2023-05-02/Ursula/d81bf4
Bill:
Here is another, perhaps even a better flower, this is Phalaenopsis Younghome Lucky Star. This has a good deal of red on the lip to go along with all of these tiny, concentric red bars. Blooms are closer to three inches, and there are two spikes with 8 flowers total. This smells a bit like mango!!

Pretty and a nice scent!!

I love the bright yellows in both of those 'Younghomes.' But where does the 'Younghome' part of the name come from? Both your Younghome somethings are bright yellow, my Younghome Little Sprite is pink and pinker. I did a web search and Younghomes seem to come in a lot of colors. What is the common denominator?

Bill answers:

Younghome is the name of one of the newer orchid nurseries in Taiwan. They are trying to breed for and produce colorful Phalaenopsis hybrids.
And I believe 'Mituo' is another nursery producing similar Phals.
