We came from here
The thread "Our Orchid blooms in June 2023 🌺" in Orchids forum

Today is July 1., another hazy day in NJ!
Not too much is happening here in the blooming department, most of my Orchids are adding growth. But, a few of the species are doing their thing!
This one, Epidendrum longirepens, is interesting, its blooms resemble beetles to entice real beetles for some pollination. Smiling It always blooms this time of year, outside.

I noticed the small hitchhiker only while looking at these pictures. 10 Acorn s go to the first spotter!!
Jumellea comorensis usually blooms here and there, there is always a Cinnamon scent making you look.

That pretty little snail on the dorsal is too cute to be called a hitchhiker. Hilarious!

And isn't it great that we have these wonderful pictures, so we can actually see those guys so clearly! Too cute, but I would think he might do some damage to that little plant, no?

Yes, those little snails do damage. Unfortunately when I saw it in my pictures, I checked and didn't find it any longer. Too late.

I had to sprinkle Sluggo around some pots the other day. After we had some rain the snails woke up hungry.

Just an idea, Ursula - tomorrow or whenever you water next take along your magnifying glass, and look for the baby snail while the plant is wet.

For me the snails only make an appearance in the morning or evening when things are wet (after rain in the afternoon, sometimes but they like the cool weather). Too many hiding places on that plant for that tiny guy! Yikes.

Another big flush of blooms on the Den. crumenatum, Thunderstorm Orchid. We did have a couple of good thunderstorms a few days ago but it's still amazing how often this baby puts out flowers. It was just coming into bloom when I got home from my trip on June 1st, as well.

Abigail, look at the bloom pictures pretty much at 12 o'clock. There is a tiny spiral -snail sitting on the dorsal of the top bloom. Smiling

that is the tiniest snail in the history of snails! But what a cute start to the month!
Elaine, your crumenatum is a happy camper, for sure!
This little Grt. Why Not has opened up a festive spike of blooms, just in time for the holiday.

Your Den is putting on quite a display, Elaine!

Lindsey, the richness of your Grt. Why Not is great.

Just open in the last week is the first spike on Cym. Louie Bachand:

Tiger Orchid (Cymbidium canaliculatum) has dominated in the blooms despite being only one sixth of the genetic makeup (the cross was a diploid Canal Parish with a tetraploid Golden Elf).

And I waited to show off my Mores sun loving Vandas are loving this heat. This has been in bloom for over a month and more spikes are on the way. But they are getting too tall and leggy, they are starting to plop around. Once we get daily rain, I will cut and propagate these.

The purple ones are fragrant:

I have accidentally done it on one of my vandas. I didn't want to toss it because I was so upset that I broke it and so I water rooted it. It took a long time but it developed roots.

However the other way to do it is if it gets too long, you can remove the leaves just below where you want to propagate it. Maybe 6 inches cutting and so long as there are at least 6 sets of Leaves from the bottom.

The "bald spots" where the leaves used to be will develop roots but you will have to be patient because it will take a long time for the roots to come out. Then once the roots are out you can cut it and the bottom will also developed 2 or 3 shoots.
Tomorrow I will take a photo of one that I cut and had developed roots. It is actually the fastest way of propagating Vandas for me.

That's neat, Gigi, thank you! I have those same little semi-terete Vandas from Motes and they're growing but not blooming as well as yours are. I've never had any keikis form until this year so I'll be separating at least one of them this year after it finishes blooming, I think. I don't think any of mine are long enough to cut and root like you did, yet.

Yes it has to be long so that both the bottom and top has leaves. I have keikis too but the main ones are getting really taller.
