It is from the nearby group but had been separated. When I bought it last year I split into sections and placed in several spots. Changed the plan this year and put them all together. That is when I noticed the odd bugger.

Cool semp! Could that rosette have been damaged at some point? I have one similar, although not an arach that got broken when I was splitting it from a group. I stuck it in the pot anyway and I noticed a few weeks later that it had several new middles growing in it.

Could be Kate. I really didn't pay much attention to it. That grouping did not do well. I thought they had died and I ignored that area. Found it when I was cleaning up beds

Damage can cause them to put out multiply offsets at the end of a stolon. I have a number of them in my semp beds. I find them interesting.
Love you photo Jennifer. Smiling

Agree with Lynn. You see this from time to time, its actually fairly common. One thing to consider, however, is that the rosettes in that kind of situation usually will not grow as well as they are competing for resources. I've had good results by dividing them into separate rosettes, where they appear to resume a normal life and produce lots of offsets. They appear to grow better when divided.

I've noticed that its often the seedlings that have this growth pattern...have you all noticed it in mature semps also??

The one that I damaged was a mature one Greg, and I also had one like this that was sent to me as part of an order. But I noticed earlier in the week that the one that I ordered had died, not just the 3 headed one, but the single rosette too, I'm not sure what happened to them as all the other semps in that containeare doing just fine. Shrug! I'll have to check to see what variety is was.
