I'm glad they got rid of the gator. Those things are too dangerous.

It was a big gator and apparently when they shot that one they saw an even larger one in the same area! Blinking

Just came across this article regarding the body in the gator. Hope the link works. I didn't know that a child was also devoured. prior to this event.

News showed the ten most infested alligator lakes in the US...Lake Jesup, is the lake we live near, just two miles up the road. I've kayaked in Lake George, and Lake Kissimmee. Hardly anyone goes out on Lake Jesup, small fishing boats, but not in kayaks.

10 Most Alligator-infested Lakes in the United State, of course 7 are in Florida.

1. Lake Jesup (Florida)
2. Lake George (Florida)
3. Lake Kissimmee (Florida)
4. Alligator Lake (Florida)
5. Lake Okeechobee (Florida)
6. Sawgrass Lake (Florida)
7. Lake Poinsett (Florida)
8. Cypress Lake (Louisiana)
9. Lake Lewisville (Texas)
10. Caddo Lake (Louisiana)

We had not seen the gator in our pond for a while but yesterday it surfaced and devoured an otter. Crying : It was not a pretty sight. Until this summer we always had ducks, lots and lots of them hanging around in our back yard, but none to speak of this year. This appears to be a well fed gator. Grumbling

I know it is nature, but sure glad I haven't witnessed a gator eating another animal. I know a woman that had a pet duck, she would go up and down the Rainbow River with her duck on her paddle board, unfortunately an otter ate her duck.

Years ago, like over 20, there was an alligator named Big George that lived at the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens here in Gainesville in one of the ponds. The staff, including the director of the garden at the time, were wading in the pond to clean it out when Big George grabbed the director by the arm and bit his arm off at the elbow. He refused to let them kill George. I always admired him for that. I met him at a Halloween party one year. Nice guy.

That is admirable of that director, he understands the gator was just doing what they do. I see so many gators on my hikes, mostly sunning along the river banks, I know to keep my social distance from them.

Did you see the white gator born at Gatorland? https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Oh yeah that is so rare! We have seen the Albinos at the Alligator Farm before but the one that is just leucistic is so more rare. Whenever we go to Newnan's Lake or out to the La Chua trail on Payne's Prairie they have absolutely monstrous gators. Newnan's should be on that list of lakes. Its overrun. Years ago a friend of ours used to fish out there in a small dory he would take out and he would take his dog in the boat, the dog would stand in the prow and look out. A gator lunged out of the water once and almost nabbed the dog. He never took the dog again LOL

People don't realize they can jump several feet straight up out of the water. They can run pretty fast also but only for a short distance.

The most scary thing is, we've been on the La Chua trail in summer when some really huge 10+ ft big FAT old gators have been sunning, and inevitably, there will be some tourists, either non-Floridians or Overseas, who will think its really an OK thing to get down close to the Gator and have a photo taken. There was a group of I believe German folks once (they sounded like they were speaking German anyway) who had a lady go within 5 ft of a HUGE gator so her husband should snap a photo. We tried to tell them it was a really, really bad idea but I don't think they believed us. If that Gator wanted her, she would have been toast

Years ago we were vacationing on Kiawah and a young, maybe 6 yrs old, boy was feeding the gators in front of their condo. I politely told him that was pretty dangerous and explained why and he just ignored me so I knocked on their door and explained it to his parents who essentially told me to myob. I gave up and called the island security who took care of it pronto. Kiawah did not want any potential gator attacks, it is bad publicity. They do not take kindly to those who do not follow the rules

I see these crazy people all the time, especially kayaking, they back their kayak all the way into the grassy marsh so close to the gator to get a selfie. Or, a mother and her kids tossing bread to them on the bank of a retention pond. Drunks at the springs get real foolish, one gal ended up dead swimming too close at Wekiva, of course the gator was euthanized.
