It's been a couple years since I have done a seedling thread on here work has finally slowed down enough that I have some free time to share pictures Smiling hopefully I can provide some winter entertainment and give you guys a sneak peak of some of the wonderful seedlings blooming in Oregon and some of the projects Dad and I have been working on here at home.

This past season was one of the best we have had in many years weather cooperated for most of it and the plants really put on a show. I have always wanted a little piece of Oregon here and finally got it nodding and there winter weather so far the next couple weeks shows forecast in the 60s and no white stuff beautiful for Iowa and giving me the opportunity to get caught up on some outside projects that I thought were going to happen in the spring .. Here's some landscape pictures from here in May it was an excellent season !

Wow! That's quite an iris farm you've got there, as well as beautiful gardens. May I ask whether it's a commercial operation? And if so, what is the business name?

Wow…that is a beautifully planned landscape … like the way the borders are mixed with evergreens.

The iris area is definitely something to behold… lovely visuals...great to see . Thank you for sharing your projects…
That's a lot of iris. It looks like you and your father have dedicated your lives to iris, certainly with enthusiasm and passion. Then a business?

Thanks everybody it certainly was a great bloom season here and with our midwest weather you just never know what your going to get until mid May . I got to see so many of the seedlings bloom that I had been waiting on and was able to make decisions on what to keep and move forward with and lots of the new ones bloom for the 1st time that showed potential to lead me towards some goals I have been working on and of course lots of pleasant surprises that made me question where did that come from and how did I get those colors from that cross Smiling

Daisy & Bea.. On the commercial business question I will not be selling any of my seedlings directly our plan was always to develop a website and eventually offer our own plants but I have come to realize that its just not possible at this time I currently have 2 construction companies that are full time jobs in them selves and the busiest time of the year for those is the summer months don't think I would ever be able to keep up with emails/orders and getting them dug/ shipped on schedule so decided against the website.

I do have some exciting news to announce for next year ..Schreiner's Smiling will be introducing my plants and were super excited to partner with them and Thankful that they were willing to take on our creations and offer them to the world there customer service and operation is 1st class and they offer worldwide shipping Smiling which is a bonus for me have had lots of people from overseas reach out on my IG page wanting plants and dealing with export/ import permits is a whole other headache that I did not want to take on.. so very excited for the future!

There were 12 seedlings named this year and shipped to Oregon but only 3 will be introduced right away as Schreiner's require a lot more stock then I had so plants will need to sit there another year Crossing Fingers! and increase so there is enough for them to catalog. Here are the intros for next year Smiling

Hey, Brad, Tom posted one of your crosses of Smoke and Thunder x Class Ring. Really interested to know what you've gotten from Smoke and Thunder. It's one of my favorite iris and I want to try getting some pods from it next year. I never would have thought to combine it with Class Ring - that seedling is gorgeous. Any suggestions of what might be a good cross with it?

Good for you Brad! Hurray! All nice ones. I don't believe I've seen Cherry On Top before. It sure is an interesting red. I like the blended colors on the standards, and such nice ruffles.

Bea.. That's awesome you live close by there is nothing like Salem during Bloom season Smiling I look forward and enjoy that trip every year always wish we had more time there to see it all the days go way to fast when Im walking Iris rows in Oregon..

Laurie .. Thank you were excited to finally be able to share some of our projects with the world and Thankful they were willing to help with that.

Derlyin.. Thank You I am trying to pick out some uniquely colored plants for intro hoping these 3 are different enough they won't get confused for others in the garden my favorites are the ones I don't need name tags for when there in bloom Smiling

Amanda .. Thank You It has been really good here especially beautiful in a big clump as you can see from the picture and has endured some tough midwest winters it will feel right at home in KC Smiling

Daisy .. I have been doing a lot of work with reds trying to add some ruffles to the color class and get something different it will be a long term project on the ruffles but progress on lots of good colors popping up Smiling

Robin.. Thank You it has some fun colors in it especially like the flower as it ages a beautiful blend of colors..

Lynn.. on the other thread you mentioned Borer problems there are granuals for lawn grubs you can put down now that will eliminate them the active ingredient is Merit usually found in there season long grub prevention at Lowes or one of the big box stores will have it my Dad uses it faithfully every spring .. I have had very few issues with them Crossing Fingers! and I think its because I am meticulous with the spring clean up in early March my foliage dies back to about 6 inches of green showing and the rest is trimmed and tossed the past few years haven't had to do much of that because the deer will chomp anything green sticking out of the snow so they have made the clean up much easier.. I also do not compost iris that is a west coast thing anything not being replanted hits the trash so were not leaving borers a place to get started..

On Barry's Plants I am assuming were in the same climate or close anyway and when I buy plants from the west coast they are coming from a warm climate and I try to acclimate them for the 1st season by planting them close to my house instead of right away putting them in the open field in the elements.. I also mulch everything now and especially over winter in our climate its not the summer months that cause damage as much as the freeze/ thaw cycles in late winter early spring this works for me because my berms and field drain very well if you ran into a really wet cycle in spring or summer the mulch is easily removed using a leaf blower.. Yes as much sun as you can give them will lead to more blooms for earlier or later varieties they don't have many requirements but sun is important.

The cross you mentioned with Smoke and Thunder is one of my all time favs here was just pollen daubing at the time and got lucky so many fun things bloomed from that in all different patterns and colors there are some of them in Oregon right now just need a little more stock Big Grin will preview those here soon .. On Smoke and Thunder depending on what its crossed with you could get anything out of Barry Blyth's plants his work opened up all kinds of new colors and patterns it comes from a plant called Coffee Trader which has Brown tones would be fun to see what happens if you mixed it with some of Barrys other Brown's..like Enter the Dragon, Dragon Dance, Smoking Aces.. Happy Pollen Daubing Smiling
Here's an example of some different things that bloomed here from one of Barry's called Valley Of Dreams

Oh, I love the colors of 19-54A! The form of 17-16B is great! Brad, I'm pretty sure I have seedling 13-65B. It hasn't bloomed yet, but it's alive. I went and checked on it yesterday to make sure. I have it marked just 13-65, but I'm quite sure it's the same one. If it blooms next year I will have to use it for some crosses. 20-83 A is an interesting pink, and the color blends on B sure are different. I got a pod from 13-4A this summer, I crossed it with 12-12B. I will have to move the named ones out of the seedling beds next summer. Smiling
