LOL, Rita I just realized you have us gardening 900 years in the future! Can you change the thread title? If not, you could start a new thread for 2024 and I'll edit the link to take us there instead. Or we can just roll with it... Rolling on the floor laughing

It is interesting to think about what vegetable gardening will look like in 2924. Will all our food be mechanically produced in controlled environments? Will our food come from something we don't even recognize as farming, like creating food in petri dishes? (I shudder at the thought) Glare

But then I look back at farming 900 years ago in England (I am a fan of British archeology). Back then, they were plowing the same planting rows year after year to incorporate organic matter to create rich soil. In doing so, they created "ridge and furrow" profiles in the ground which can still be detected under today's grass lawns using radar. Thinking

When I began planting in my own "fields" 10 years ago, I followed the same methodology. The rows remain intact; we just add compost, mulch, leaves each year. We work the land by hand with simple tools, just like 900 years ago. We nourish the soil and the natural predators so we don't have to use (many) chemicals. Thumbs up

I wonder, could there be people 900 years in the future growing tomatoes the same way we do now? It is an astounding thought to me. Crossing Fingers!

Soylent green is people!!

Jim and I had a discussion recently about Elon Musk's vision for humankind to become interplanetary if not interstellar. The SpaceX program is definitely focused on eventually creating colonies on Mars, probably underground at first, and food production is definitely one of the challenges with that.
