About 23 yrs ago I started out w/ the (one) large rock in these 2 photos.
I snagged it from my Mom's house, she also had a few "Chicken and hens" so I snagged a handful of them as well.
I put the few Chicken and hens on top of the big ole rock and after all of these yrs they've developed into this.
A few yrs ago I wanted to dig everything up and replace the edging, the rocks and the cloth underneath them but my Succulents got so out of hand I just put the project on the back burner and I never got around to it.
Thought I'd take a few photos of them since soon they will be going into hibernation for the winter, they are already starting to turn color wise and are drying up at the bottoms.
These 2 photos are of the right side of my Succulent garden, formerly, my rock garden.

I don't have a lot of Succulents in the middle or close to the house so as not to disturb them when dragging the hose to water the grass and my other plants.
I HAD to do that because hubby does NOT watch where he's stepping when he uses the hose.

This lil' gem is new this yr, well I've had it for a few years but the middle part has really grown this summer.

I think it looks like a Dragon, my 2 daughters think it looks like something else, sigh, kids.

They sure look happy there.

Those are wonderful Shaw. I really like your 'dragon'. It is getting ready to bloom, that is why the center of the rosette has grown like that. Once the rosette blooms it will die. But just look at all the offspring it is leaving to carry on.
Your hen and chicks seem to be one of the Jovibarba types, with the common name of 'rollers', because the little offsets can detach and roll away from the mother. They are very hardy and so much fun.
My favorite photos is the first one, with the very large rock with 'rollers' growing all over it.
They all looks so healthy and happy.

When the bloom opens you will know for sure if it is a Jovibarba or Sempervivum.
This is what a Sempervivum bloom would look like, open star like shape. Pink, red, rarely white/cream.


This is what a Jovibarba bloom looks like. It stays in a tubular shape. Pale yellow, almost white.

I think by the looks of it and according to the pics that you shared w/ me (TYVM!) that it’s a Jovibarba bloom as the blooms look white to me.
I do like the pink better but heck fire I’m happy not to mention excited, as this is the very 1st time in all of these years that I’ve ever even gotten a flower.
*I wonder why that is?*
Gosh, if it takes this long I'll be 6ft under before I see another bloom in my little rock garden.
But.....
I am thinking that these look like they've changed a bit too, I think they've sprouted a bit more.
I wonder if I should move that big rock so the one on the right has room to expand?

Watching it's (their) progress is so much fun, I'll surely be taking more pics to share.

Sure enough, they are Jovibarba.
That is such a huge and happy colony. I wouldn't move the rock, they will take care of themselves, no worry. They have all this time, that is what makes them such awesome plants.
If you leave the spent bloom stalks they will reseed themselves. Just ask me how I know that.

I'm new here and love the pictures Shaw. That little area with all the Hens and Chickens has all the bones ready for creating a little miniature garden scene!

There is only one little succulent in the center of these little buildings in the picture I sent, but your succulent area with a few little buildings, or even one little miniature Faerie or whatever of choice would create a whole miniature garden instantly!

WOO HOO ValleyLynn, I have me some of them thar Jovibarbas, sounds like the title of a new dance craze.
When the spent bloom stalks turn to seed will I be able to see the seeds so I can collect them and plant them elsewhere?
*They will prbly be too small for my old eyes to see them.*
I am not only a habitual over waterer I’m a seed harvester as well.

WOW a man after my own heart. Hi Mr Project man. I am a Project woman. I love creations used with the plants. I like my plants to either have a different/odd pot or a scene to compliment the plant.

I'm so new on this site that I've bounced from forum to thread so many times in different places and have made little comments that I hope I haven't forgotten to thank someone somewhere if I need to! HaHaHa! does that make since? In other words I forget where I've been and almost missed answering you. Sorry for the delay. Anyway,....Yes Lynn. I love making planters and garden art with hypertufa. That pot in the little ghosttown like planter above is one of mine too. I call it my "Lizard Shanty Town" because a few of the thousands of lizards in the gardens like going in an out of the little buildings and sunning all over it.

I am a project person too Cinta, and you are right about me liking the unusual plants, planters, art, whatever!

David, there will always be a notice on your home page, showing any new posts to threads that you have posted to. Makes it easy to keep up with what is going on.

It would be great if you have other awesome projects, like those above, if you started a new thread and post photos of all of them. I don't want to miss any of them, so would be a great way for us to be able to watch what you are doing.
