Sedum is so hardy, they can be neglected and still survive.

I have a lot of sedum acre .... grows like crazy in full sun, step-able and transplants so easily.
I love the upright ones too. especially if you accidentally snap some off, just stick in the ground and it'll grow roots and continue to thrive.

That is one of many reasons I love Sedum. : ) Then when they bloom it is an added bonus.

That is the aim of having the databases, one stop to find out all you want to know about any given plant. I was rushed... i'll have to see if i have more. It is usually a plant i dont take a lot of photos of... but since i do have a lot of it, as it does spread like crazy here.

I took a huge clump of it to my Wisc place, which is mostly shaded, and it struggles up there. I'm sure its the shade and not the zone, which is 4.

I wouldn't think it is the zone either. You are probably right in thinking it's the shade. Are there any sunny spots it could go?

No -- no real sun. I pretty much live in the pines and oak trees. But, believe it or not, it is on Wisconsin's invasive list.

Well, it is a tough plant. It is so shollow rooted though, I have an hard time concidering it invasive. : )

I love growing sedums, although I did loose alot last year because of all the rain we had, and I tend to " cover" the not so hardy succulents from rain so they don't get so much, cause we have alot of rain in the spring time here. They tend to rot on me. They are the one plants that I don't worry about watering though in the summer time.

Thank you Kathryn. Sorry you lost some of yours. Which varieties do you have? We get alot of rain here in the Pacific Northwest. I lost some of my Coral Reef and the Ogon. The rest just seem to thrive as long as they have really good drainage. Our clay can be hard on them, so I work in compost, sand and chicken grit. I didn't get that done for the Ogon and Coral Reef, both of which are very eye catching plants. : (
The gal that runs our plant sales at the local hardware store grows her Ogon and some others in cactus mix and they grow like weeds. I think I am going to try that this year with Ogon and Coral Reef.

I'm lucky (I guess) to garden on a very sandy loam. But I sell beardless irises, so I have to keep watering all the time. I find my taller sedums do very well getting a lot of water in a sandy area. I grow them right along with my siberians and Japanese iris. I don't think you would want to do that on a clay soil, but on sand it works.

Hi Polly. I find it doesn't seem to matter with the tall varieties. They take just about anything (clay, sandy, loamy and anything in between). It's the small varieties that don't seem to care much for the straight clay. Some even grow on the walls of my cement raised planters along the road out front. Tough little guys. I bet that make a really pretty picture, the iris with the tall sedum. Would love to have you put a picture in the Companion Plants Database if you can. Another idea of how to use sedum. I have 30 or 40 variety of sedums LOL ogon isn't hardy for me, and the coral reef wasnew last year , got huge, and sure doesn't look like it's going to come back or not.

I lost the purple emperor to rot last year, and a few others.

I'm a huge sedum fan, love the tall varieties, but am just getting into the short growing ones .

Opps, back on target, Kathryn if you have named varieties and have pictures of them I would love to have you add pictures to the database. Let me know which ones you have and I can fill out the entries for you if you don't want to do all of that. Then all you would have to do is add pictures.

I'm off the next few days, I'll look through my pics and see what pictures i do have, I may not have bloom pics of all of them though.

Nice part about Sedum & Semps is that they don't have to have blooms to be interesting. : )
