Came across this at our Library:
" The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds" by Robert Gough and Cheryl Moore-Gough.
published 2011 by Storey Publishing
It gives detailed information not only on saving seeds ,but also seed germination for 322 vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruits, trees and shrubs. Very comprehensive!

One short coming to this book is that they did not include any grains.

@JonnaSudenius might want to know about " The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds" by Robert Gough and Cheryl Moore-Gough.

Did they have many pictures of seeds?

If I'm right, it costs more than $36 from Amazon, even used.

Wow! I just checked - my library has it! I just put it on reserve! Thanks! Always love books with information.

Only a few pictures of seeds.
I ordered a copy from Canadian book dealer, and I think it was about $22. Canadian?

But they do not appear to have heard of Dr. Deno? at least i have not found any reference to his data base.
They give detailed germination instructions though.

I'll have to compare what they say to Dr. Deno. ( Had to dig my hard copy out of the seed bin as the USDA site is closed down).

I use the Thompson & Morgan Seed Germination Database which is invaluable. It's out of print now but available on the web. A few years ago I copied it and turned it into a Word file. I can't wait to see this book and compare it.

Here is a link to the Seed Germination Database - After the Hint's section it lists the genus with specific instructions.

If anyone would like a copy of the Word file just Tree mail me with an email address and I'll send it to you.

That is a good general reference, and it also has plant specific info at the end.
Thanks.

Thank you Corey for the link. Every link or suggestion I get is very helpful to decide whether I will write a book or not.
Some say: go on Jonna! , some say: There is already so much written about it, so you won't add anything new!
I really have to evaluate all reactions, try to find the books suggested and read them.
I will rule out all books that are written by professionals and for professionals. If I decide to write a book it will be not scientifical, just my experience as being a starter once and I would like to add a lot of pictures and just a few text. So, I'm mainly looking for books for real starters. I was a starter once and I would like to find a book that would have helped me in the beginning. A lot of books for starters are mainly about vegetables. Although I want to mention those in my book, the main thing will be growing ornamental plants, I live in a region where only some vegetables will set seed, so I can never write a book about growing, seeding and harvesting vegetables in general. But I can write about ornamental plants, saving seeds from it, growing them from seed, sowing in vermiculite, wintersowing, etc., but also want to show a lot of pictures of seeds and seedpods and show how plants finally will grow in the garden.

Jonna, what I needed most as a beginner was an example of what was the right amount of water (damp but not soggy), and what a soil mix felt like and looked like when it was "light enough" or "drained well enough".

>> ... Dr. Deno. ( Had to dig my hard copy out of the seed bin as the USDA site is closed down).

Caroline, if you want PDF copies of Dr. Deno's SG in T&P, send me an email address that I can send big files to. With the two supplements, that's 22 MB. The PDFs CAN be searched.

>> Seed Germination Database

Anne, I also love that! I found it on the "VirtualSeeds.com" when they attributed it to T&M:

"The following seed germination guide is property of Thompson & Morgan.
This guide is out of print and not property of Virtual Seeds."

I found it necessary to copy the column titles or headings into the text every 20-30 lines.

I think it COULD be pulled into Excel as a fixed-field-length file.

I actually have had it in the back of my mind for years now to turn it into an excel file even if I had to copy and paste. I'll add it to my "Winter, I don't have to mow the lawn, Vacation Job Jar of things computer to get done for the garden. Winter is when I catch up on updating and creating my garden databases and such.

Sure.

Twenty or thirty years ago, I might not have said this, but now ... I kind of hope we get our government back some day. Or at least SOME kind of government.

There are changes I might wish for, but if I'm not wise enough to plant fall snap peas and Chinese cabbage at the right time, maybe I'm not wise enough to make single-handed changes in the government.

But I blush when I think that we had the gall to go to other continents and announce that WE were equipped to teach THEM how democracy should work.

One UN observer who usually monitored central American elections went to Florida a few elections ago. When asked how we compared to "young" democracies, he had faint praise like, "well, at least there were no armed gangs at polling places".

Caroline, thanks for reminding me to look up Plato, democracy and The Republic.

http://facultyfiles.frostburg....

"He had no faith in the rule of the rich, nor any confidence in the ability of ordinary citizens to run a city like Athens. The rich, as he saw, had mostly their special interests in mind, and during the time of their short-lived regimes they had shown to what length they could go to defend the advantages of the few against the majority of ordinary people. But the rule by the many was no remedy for the ills of oligarchy, according to Plato, because ordinary people were too easily swayed by the emotional and deceptive rhetoric of ambitious politicians."

"An oligarchy is said to be that in which the few and the wealthy, and a democracy that in which the many and the poor are the rulers," as Aristotle put it in his Politics. "

"There is no chance for things to become better unless knowledge and reason are put in command"

"Until philosophers are kings, or the kings and princes of this world have the spirit and power of philosophy, … cities will never have rest from their evils,”

Yes, but HOW can we give power only to those who would use it wisely, and keep it out of the hands of those who would use it selfishly, unwisely and self-destructively?

I vote to put Dave and Trish in charge of everything.

Just wanted to say that I picked up the book at the library this afternoon and am so impressed with what little I've read so far, that I've already ordered it from Amazon!.
