It is my understanding that the photo chosen to represent each plant in the database is the one with the most thumbs ups. There are often really interesting photos that certainly deserve recognition but perhaps would not be the best representative photo (e.g., close-up of the bark, a bloom featuring more of a bug than the actual bloom, etc.) . For those lovely shots, I will often give an acorn rather than a thumb to show my appreciation but to not skew the photo into a position to be The Representative. I also often open the plant file itself and peruse the other photos, adding thumbs to those I think are good representatives of the plant and acorns for other cool shots. This gives me a fresh look at the plant as a whole, as often there are many photos I've never looked at.

This is not at all scientific, and I certainly have no problem with the database photo changing up as folks see and like new pictures. In some ways, it would be nice if the representative photo simply rotated through all of the submittals (?). Just a couple random thoughts as I sit here not wanting to get bundled up to go outside in the freezing weather....

These are good thoughts and good ideas. I like the idea of changing up how we assign the position of "Primary Photo" for each plant.

But I'll add: don't worry about the thumbs. My advice is to give those thumbs as often as you like without considering how it'll affect image placement. If it becomes an issue, then we'll find a smarter and better way to do that sorting. But it feels good to get thumbs, so give 'em.

I was totally unaware and had wondered how/who chose the photos!

I think it would be nice to rotate the pictures that are under the parent plant especially as they are all representative of that plant. Either that or put the latest entries first so that you could sometimes see the latest entries first instead of having to go so far down to see the latest ones that you might have missed when they were downloaded. Some parent plants like lilies have a lot of entries.

I prefer the present system, but I'm a flower floozie. I don't want to go to an alphabetical page of the database and see cultivars represented by thumbnails of bark, seeds, and twigs. I appreciate those other photos, but I want to see nothing but the highest-rated blooms on the front page, especially when I'm treating the winter doldrums by browsing through the alphabetical rose, plumeria, iris, or hibiscus pages.

Best to keep it the way it is.
