...so you could burn a yule log again. Edible "logs" will just have to take their place in our more modern world. Mine will have nuts and dates and graham cracker crumbs inside, and be rolled in more graham cracker crumbs for the bark.

Beautiful story Sharon Lovey dubby Thank you!

I always wanted a fireplace when we were growing up so I could hang my Christmas stocking on a mantle. Whistling

I have visited a couple historical homes that have those huge fireplaces that hold a whole log and they are really cool but I have no idea how they got the log in.

My mom made pecan logs too Thumbs up

Merry Christmas to you and yours Sharon - you are showered with so many blessings even if they aren't from a yule log.

I agree I know you would have many stories to add to your many you have shared. I tip my hat to you. for all the tales you share with us.

You make me wish for a log to burn in my unused fireplace. I seldom burn anything as the chimney has not been cleaned since I moved in 24 years ago, so the risk of fire is too great. Instead I burn a candle in there.

Merry Christmas to you and Sunshine!!!! Hope Santa brings him a nice bone to chew on. Hurray! Hurray!

I never knew pecan logs were to represent the Yule Log. Interesting. You teach us many things Sharon & we are grateful for the knowledge you share, whether it be your own or the knowledge passed down to you from Aunt Bett & Ninna. I think your life was blessed & showered with wonderful things despite not having had a Yule Log in so many years. We plan to burn a fire all night in our fireplace on Christmas Eve & I will be thinking of you & raise my glass in toast to you, Aunt Bett & Ninna.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!!!
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown

I love this story, Sharon! Tony and I always burn a yule log (or more precisely, several yule logs). Now I will toast to you on Christmas Eve as well! Sharing my fireplace with you, as well as the TV Yule log!

Wonderful Christmas story Sharon, and I too wish you had a big fireplace so that you could burn a huge old yule log. Have you ever thought of building one outside? Green Grin!

I love the painting of Sunshine, love the eyes especially, not sure if they are saying "I'm sorry Mom", "I love you Mom", or "please Mom". Hilarious!

Merry Christmas Sharon!

Hadn't thought about an outside fireplace, that might be a good thing to think about. We had one at home in the mountains, too.

As Sharon requested, here is the Christmas Log recipe.

A Christmas Log (The recipe is my grandmother's, she always made this at Christmas. I find that the amounts of things like marshmallows have changed, my bag of mini marshmallows has 10.5 oz, and a box of graham crackers that I assumed was a pound, is smaller. So I have less of each, and will adjust the other ingredients by guesswork, and make it today.)

Graham Cracker Roll (aka Christmas Log)

1# dates, pitted and cut into small pieces
3/4 # of marshmallows, cut small (modern recipe would call for mini marshmallows)
1 3/4 c walnuts, chopped
38 graham crackers, the whole long double ones, crushed into fine crumbs Save out 1 c for rolling the log to make the bark
speck of salt (I think it humors the cook)

Put everything except the 1 c of crumbs in a bowl, and mix. Add enough milk to make it stick together, then add
1 1/2 tsp vanilla, and mix it again. ( If you put the vanilla in a little bit of milk and sprinkle it over the dry mixture, it should be evenly distributed). When you are satisfied with the moisture in the mixture, it should be evenly moist but not sloppy, divide it in half. Shape each half into a long roll about 2-3 inches in diameter, roll them in the crumbs, then wrap them in plastic wrap (original recipe said waxed paper)
Chill for several hours, overnight if possible. Slice thin to serve. This will keep for a long time in the refrigerator, just slice off what you need and put the rest back.
Edited to add additional details now that I have refreshed my memory by making the logs for the first time in about 30 years.
It takes about 3/4 c of milk to make it moist enough to stay together. Best not to add it all at once unless you have more cracker crumbs.
Butter your hands before you start mixing and shaping the logs, it is very sticky! After a basic log is formed, roll it in cracker crumbs in a long cake pan. A plate would be big enough if you made more logs. My logs are about 16 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. After rolling, put the log on a big piece of plastic wrap, roll it up, and then you can shape it more easily.
After mine are chilled, I will cut a slice for you to see, so watch for a picture.

****Pictures for this recipe are located a few posts on down, scroll and look, you sure don't want to miss them!! Thanks Mary! (this edit is from Sharon!)

I don't ever remember having a Yule log, guess I missed out on some special times. No fireplace here, althought I would surely love one. Friends have one, but gas log, so beautiful though.

The picture of Sunshine is so precious, she did give you a very special gift.
