The month of January seems like it lasts forever here in Utah. Iris bloom is still 3-4 months away. I have really been enjoying Brad's 2013 iris pictures so thought I would share pictures of some of the median iris which were favorites in my garden last spring. If you aren't growing any medians consider giving them some room. They provide great variety and can really extend the bloom season. These are in no particular order........

I agree Lucy.......I love my TBs but like the medians as well. I don't have to choose so I'll enjoy both.

Good Show Paul! I added a quite a few MTB's to my garden last fall, and can't wait to see them this spring. It was 15 below today, and supposed to be 21 below by Sunday here, so spring seems a long way off right now. Your pictures give me hope!

Is it because they're so small that the beards look enormous?

Beautiful assortment Paul. I especially liked Toffee, Gingerbread Trim and Ma Chere!!

Yours too, Lucy!

Paul Thanks for sharing these a great Idea and they look Outstanding!! I can always look at more Iris pictures especially when it's freezing outside our forecast for the next week has record freezing temp's in it and that's saying something for Iowa Today's high was 18 above which is supposedly the best day of the week we tried to work a little in it and push some snow off a roof to get something done but the wind was just to much, Hard to get motivated to do any work outside in this I'm afraid it is going to be a miserable winter here so keep the pictures coming if you can just keep posting them for another 90 days or so I may not go completely nuts with cabin fever. nodding

I agree with Mary Ann the beards on these are talking to me my favorites are Juicy Tidbit and Dime..I am working on a bed just for some smaller one's and these will be on my must have list next year I really like the Outrageous Beards, I get asked all the time what is my favorite of all of them in my garden and I can never answer it because it changes all the time but that is my question to you if you had to pick just 3 what would they be ?

Thank you for the beautiful pictures Paul! I have several of the ones you posted growing in my garden. I love Cats Eye. It is such a round little bloom and does well here. My oldest one is Cherry Garden, Jones, 1967 and my newest is Fern's Magic, D. Stewart, 2008. I love the TB's but there is something special about the little guys.

I only have about a dozen MDB's as they do not do well in this warm climate. I am growing them to see which ones are hardiest and I will keep and pass them around and the ones that do not thrive I will just enjoy in pictures.

Debra, I am in zone 7a (actually middle of state so really still 7). Most Iris growers here will not grow the MDB's and are quick to tell people who ask that MDB's do not do well here. I have one little guy called 'Trimmed Velvet' that not only increases well, but bloomed and re-bloomed last year. It is the only little MDB that is a re-bloomer that I know of. He grows in full sun and just seems to like being left alone. A year ago, in the dead of winter, a friend gave me tiny survivors of her attempt to grow MDB's. She lost their names and they were growing in shallow soil in the bottom of black plastic pots stacked haphazardly by her garden shed. Unlike most iris, MDB's do not like being uprooted and will take their time to settle in and begin blooming again so I brought them home and repotted them in larger pots and put them all together in an old wheelbarrow with mulch around the pots. I pushed the wheelbarrow around the yard during the summer according to shady conditions and high temperatures. A young man who has recently just become interested in growing iris came to my garden to take photos and called this 'iris in their mobile home'. They did well and I am hoping for some bloom this spring. They will get permanent homes in the ground this summer without disturbing their roots.

Trimmed Velvet is gorgeous! I'm in 8a, but have added it to my gotta-try-this-one list. Most of my planting areas get afternoon shade, so might be good, here, too. Thank you for the information. Smiling
