Has anyone started yet this year? I did my first yesterday: one packet of ecinacea and two of begonias.

I haven't done any wintersowing yet.

I will start my begonias tomorrow and take cuttings of the pelargoniums. Oh and get the seed pels going as well. I'm cutting back this year, still tiered from all the watering last spring/summer. Way to many plants and my plant sales have not been that great. The cost of the HP soil and seeds and greenhouse heating just keeps going up.

Getting ready to start some winter-sowing this weekend. Huge storm expected tomorrow, so may wait to put out jugs till after the worst of that has passed.

Also getting ready to start some rosemary, onions, and leeks. Those are fine to start early and can go outdoors early as well.

Much more to follow later.

Rolling on the floor laughing NOT ME! Rolling on the floor laughing You know why Karen! I probably should do some winter sowing. I suspect I will lose a lot of marginal zone plants due to the extreme winter we are having. That used to make me so sad. But now I just see it as an opportunity since I'm tight on space.

I will do some spring sowing in containers outside.

I will start some stuff in Feb. My new job has me traveling out-of-town every few weeks, so this year I need to scale down with indoor seed starting. Might do more wintersowing though.

Just not in the mood for some reason and it's been getting so cold at night and no sunshine during the days. Hopefully it will pass and I'll feel like getting the slower starting seeds going soon.

Oh, thanks for mentioning starting onions! They are so pokey, and I never remember early enough! But first, I have to thaw out the potting soil! Hilarious!

I am soaking daylily seeds in a peroxide solution, and when they start to germinate, I will pot them and put them under light.

I will repeat the process in two weeks.

I said the same to my husband yesterday, Allison. It hasn't been this cold in years.

We had some snow cover for insulation but it got up to 40°yesterday, rained like crazy, then a dusting of snow over that. What little snow is out there will offer little to no protection to roots.

We have the same situation here, Karen. There is maybe an inch or two still on the ground in some areas.

Well maybe our foot of snow will protect stuff from the below zero temps to come. But surely when things thaw I'll get some loss due to so much wet.

If you guys have snow cover, you should be ok. Our temps fluctuate with extremes and you would be surprised at how tough the plants can be. This is an unusual year because we actually do have snow cover. More often we have no snow for protection

Some one mentioned soaking Day Lily seeds in hydrogen peroxide?
What dilution is used?

If day lily seeds are like other seeds, the advice that I see for watering or for soaking seeds Is around 0.1% H2O2, which means diluting drugstore 3% peroxide around 32-to-1.
1.5 tsp per cup
or 1 ounce per quart

http://www.using-hydrogen-pero...

But many gardeners have told me that they often use it much stronger - like 2-4 times as storng or even stronger.

I've used the weak form (0.1%) on older salvia seeds and either they responded very well to it, or its just that, that year, I had finally learned how not to kill so many salvia seeds.

It'll be at least a week yet till I can get started...too many weather-related delays. It's also been far too cold to dig my way out to where the containers are stored. We even lost a large thermopane window due to the crazy cold, I guess, so replacing that will be first on the springtime to-do list. Rolling my eyes.
