Is there some sort of tutorial on how to manage the plant lists? I don't know if I found a bug, or if I totally screwed things up, or what...

I started adding things into the general list, then discovered that I could make categories, and as I add plants to the list, I could designate a category.

But first, I thought I had to deliberately add plants to that category...

End result (after adding and subtracting 2 daylilies, x number of times, to/from the general list, with and without the daylilies category), is that I have 2 daylilies only tagged as being in the daylily category, but the daylily category sums up as having 6 entries (even though when you display it, it only shows those two daylilies). Of course, this does not reflect the reality that I have way more than 6 daylilies in the general list, but I didn't know about the categories as I was adding them to the general list, and they didn't/don't automatically bucket into the later made daylilies category.

I don't know if any of this is making any sense.

I think I need to delete the categories (maybe delete the whole general list? *shudder* and start all over again?) but I don't see any way to do it.

No I don't think you need to delete your general list. I think you can go to "manage plant list" then edit each plant into the category you want it to go to. If you have 20 daylilies in the general list, just click on each one and edit the category "to daylilies", etc.

Seedfork is right. Just go into the Lists Control panel area of your list and click on the little pencil and paper icon (next to the trash can icon on the right side of the screen); that will allow you to move your daylilies, one by one, I'm afraid, into your daylily category.

I still think there is a bug, though... I moved some more daylilies into the daylily category (by clicking on that pencil/paper icon), so there should be (and I see pictured) 6 daylilies in there (so far).

HOWEVER, on the summary line for the daylily categories, it says that there are 10 in that category. Um, NO.

It certainly does sound like a bug. I'll look into this.

Great start to your list! I kept subdividing my categories into more lists, (see my profile) I am happy with it now and love using it, even adding some notes like where & when purchased, or where it's planted.

I think I might have found the problem here. If some of your entries are "hidden" then they might be counted on your profile page but when you click to view the list, it will of course not show them.

When you set up your new category for daylilies, did you by any chance mark it as "private, only visible to me?" (For some reason, I always have trouble remembering how to go back and change those things )

Um, duh, maybe I did such a thing a long time ago when I first started playing the database?

The problem is, it looks like I can only see the plant list as "others" see it. As it currently stands, I counted up about 65 daylilies (it is hard to count when scrolling), but the "Daylilies" category says that there are 69. (Before I started tagging all the daylilies and only had a few, this was consistent with what I had - the program thinks there are 4 more daylilies than what I am seeing/counting on my public view list.)

So the question is - if there ARE hidden entries, how the heck do I find them? I can't figure out how to do that. Once I find them, hopefully I can figure out how to make them visible.

I think we talked about this a long time ago, can't remember exactly though. I have numbers that are off too, from the drop down menu if I select hemerocallis, it says 105, from the list on the left side it's 104. Same thing with roses, the numbers are off by several counts.

Hmm, well, maybe there's something else going on other than the simple explanation of hidden entries. I'll look again.

What you might try looking at is going into your "Lists Control Panel", then scroll down to where it shows "Manage Categories" in the blue column on the left side and click on that. Click on the "edit" icon (on the right side where it shows the list of your categories) for your daylily category. That should bring up a screen that shows what your privacy setting is for that category. Don't click on the name of the category (that's the mistake I always make), just click on the "edit" icon next to the category in the list.

I tried the edit icon... it says that the daylily category is public. I don't know why the count is off by 4. (For that matter, I don't know how to look at "my own private" list, even if I *did* have one.)

Fwiw, the iris and rose counts seem to be correct...

I wonder if it stays the higher number in the drop down menu even if we have deleted a plant at one point and but it shows the correct inventory number on the left side.
On the left my Iris count is 193, in the drop down menu it's 219.

What drop down menu? I'm looking at the number on the left side, and it's 4 higher than it should be (for the daylilies only).

I think you are right, though, that somewhere something has gotten messed up/out of sync with our adding/deleting plants.

Off to go delete a missing/dead iris now (which I am not going to replace) - let's see if the iris count gets messed up now.

OK...

First of all, I was wrong about the iris count being correct (once there are too many items, I can lose place when I am counting).

After a few recounts, I verified that I had 20 iris, but the total showed as 21 in the iris category on the left side list.

I removed one iris, so I now have 19. (I counted the irises again to verify this.) However, the left side list was unchanged and STILL lists 21 irises in the iris category.

Somewhere in the code, the category total is not being decremented when items are deleted from the overall plant list. (And yes, the iris that I deleted had been tagged as being in the iris category.)

The drop down menu is found on the Lists page, when I click on View my List, the side a menu where you can select to view by genus. It's not on the Manage my list page.

I think you are on to something about plants that got deleted from the database, still being counted in your list but not visible since the plant itself is gone.

Your plant list is really just a pile of numbers: it matches the Plant ID of the plants in the database. So on your profile I just count up how many plant IDs you have in each category. Then when you go into a category to view the actual plants, it pulls down the list of plant IDs and then goes into the database to get the info on each plant. If there is no matching plant then it simply doesn't display it.

The solution, I guess, is to do the matching on your profile page, as well.
