Here are some Jovibarba rollers that I started last year from seed. I love these plants! They grow in the most challenging places with outstanding colors. Anyone collecting these? Looking on Erwin Geiger's Nursery site he has many more of these than I've been able to locate. I have about 25 or so different ones.

Hi Mark those are all lovely!!! The ones I got from you are doing great!!! I don't know exactly how many I have but a new one for me this spring was "Emerald Spring" hybridized by our very own "Jungleshadows" If you don't have that one its worth getting!! I love how the chicks on Emerald Spring stay on the stolon just a bit longer so they are larger when they roll away, or maybe its just the plant that I have

Mark 'Emerald Spring' was from my first two crosses back in '64.

My problem with rollers for hybridizing is that they don't bloom very often and when they do give seedlings they tend not to vary as much as do the non-rollers. Helen also found that they sold much less well than the others. I had a blue-green that was named 'Emerald Fountain' but I haven't seen it in any commercial lists in a while. None of my rollers has bloomed here. They must need a warmer summer than we have in Oregon!

What a wonderful display they make Mark. Each is seems to be different in form and color. Very nice.

Kevin, for me it seems that the colony just needs to become mature, then they will bloom.

Kevin - mine also have bloomed - none bloom all the way out, but I seem to always have some roller blooming!!

I'm a roller fan and that is a great collection Mark! Some of mine have bloomed too.

I do have Emerald Spring and I thank you Kevin for that beauty. Most of mine that have flowered have been in 38 plug flats with an inch and a half of real boney soil. I find they thrive on minimal moisture.

I must be too kind to mine here in OR. They did bloom for me in MA on much thinner soil. 'Emerald Spring' gave a rather variable group of seedlings, some very red. Wish I had some of that group now.

On the other hand the heuffs seem to bloom with abandon here and they rarely bloomed heavily in MA. Of course we only had three different ones back then!! You see why I feel like a fossil!

So that is why you are so intent on creating more heuffs for us. What were the three that you had back then?

They had such great names Heuf #1, Heuf #2 and 'Palaisii'. Helen named the first two as 'Apache' and 'Belcor'. 'Palaisii' was really 'Correvon's Form' but that was the name Bill Newhard had received the plant and all we knew that it was way different than the other two. 'Correvon's Form' is the parent of many of Bill Nixon's and Ed Skrocki's cultivars. The English had a couple more that we didn't have and those made it to the US in the 70's and 80's. When we did the Dalton project we then were able to identify 'Palaisii' as 'Correvon's Form'. There were no clones from England that matched #1 or #2 so that is when Helen did the renaming,

Sandy MacPherson had received both of these clones from Sanford but we don't know any pre-history from Sanford.

I really prefer the rollers to the J. Heuffs. They are one of the first plants I grew on my own, my mother had them in a strawberry pot and I planted them in a little clay pot when I was probably 4 or 5 years old. I inherited the pot when my mother passed away

I have other varieties now, but always room for one more. I tuck them in the cracks of the rocks that line my beds, and in some half-buried landscape timbers that are kinda rotten, and I filled the spaces with gritty soil and planted them with semps and Jovibarba rollers.

Celene, if possible I'd love to see photos!! Sounds totally beautiful!! And how sweet that these were your first plant to grow!! I can't remember but I think mine was mint or some herb. My mom used to make mint jelly, which was really just sugar water with mint flavoring I think??? Loved her mint jelly though!!

Terrible admission: I love mint as a plant and have several varieties, but I don't love mint as a flavor for food. Even when I make homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream, mint jelly, or mint chutney from my own mint.

I'll take some photos soon, I'm going to plant some of my new arrivals in the landscape timbers tomorrow if it is not pouring rain.

Here are a couple pictures I took earlier in the year. I often give new semps and sedums some TLC in a pot for a year or so, I have trouble with squirrels pulling them up. All of these pots are either from thrift stores or tag sales. I like the *ahem* weathered look. I have painted stones with the names now, replacing the so-very-attractive plastic stakes. And I cut back that sedum lineare that was encroaching on the little semp. We'll see if I regret planting that Ephedra minima there, too. Thus far, I like it.

Here is 'Madame Lorene', by far the largest roller I have. Pictured with a quarter for size reference. Very prolific! This clump was about 8 small rollers a year ago, and I've already removed probably half the clump.

I also love the weathered look in container growing. Lovely photos Celene. Look forward to the new photos of your rollers. How could a person not love them?

Great information Kevin. I love both Apache and Belcore. The color and texture of Belcore is lovely.

So far this is my largest roller, bought as J. sobolifera. I find it interesting that some of the offsets have dark tips, and some don't?
