Thread OP

Is there a master list of Dwarf Daylilies somewhere? I really dont want to go through thousands looking for what I might have a large row of. I dont have the full tag anymore. Broken off. Bought from Lowes about 8 years ago. Sorry I cant even tell you what color they are. Very overgrown and just reclaimed then today. I didnt even know they were Dwarfs till I found that broken tag. Lots and lots of seed pods and I guess I could measure how high the flower was at average. Sorry I cant provide more info, but I thought Id toss it out to everyone here. Otherwise look for this thread to get bumped in the spring when they bloom.
Thanks Dennis

Can you read anything on the tag? That would be a really helpful place to start. Otherwise you would have to search through the AHS database (though not everything has pictures) based on the flower height and (if you know) the bloom size.

Also...welcome to ATP!

Welcome!

without knowing the flower color or height - it's going to be very hard to figure out what they are.

I don't know of a "master list"… or the term "dwarf" being used in daylilies in the same way as you would, say, an apple tree. There are mini daylilies, but it refers to the size of the flower, not the size of the plant (I think - I don't grow many of the tiny flowered ones)

A couple popular smaller ones sold at nurseries are Stella D Oro (hope I spelled that right *Blush* ) and Happy Returns. Stella is more of an orange egg yolk yellow, but Happy Returns is more of a clear lemony yellow. Stella is known for making a ton of seed pods. Not sure about Happy Returns.

Both good ideas. Thanks for the advice. The words Dwarf Daylilys is on the tag and its cut in half lenghtwise. I'll look around this afternoon for even the slightst bit more of a tag. and thanks Daylily for the info on Dwarf as I somehow thought it was ment to be a small plant and not flower size. I do recall reading Have/trade lists in the past where people would have that term associated with a daylily. hmmm. As for a masterlist, I was thinking that someone might know of say there are daylilys that are dwarfs like there are spiders.
I really dont think they are Stellas. I have Stella tags and will overlay the broken just to see.
Again Thanks for the input

Welcome coldlime

According to AHS the tag could be talking about the scape height and not the bloom, the box stores label daylilies different because they know nothing about daylilies which leads to confusion among the general public.

Miniature daylilies
Daylilies with flowers less than three inches in diameter. They may be on dwarf, medium or tall scapes.

Great job
I will go out again in the grass and look around for even the smallest portion of the broken tag. I know they are not stellas as I have them also and the seed pods are longer looking vs. Stellas fatter walnut looking shape / size. Im taking a yardstick also.
Thanks again
And Seedfork... Your time and info deserve a big THANK YOU

coldlime,
Welcome!
I forgot to say welcome.
Please don't give me much credit for time and effort, all that should go to Dave for building such a great data base, and all the people who entered the info and photos into it.
Just type the height in the box for scape height and it pulls the info right up. Very fast and very simple, but I think a lot of people don't realize how simple it is to use the data base.

Welcome! coldlime!

I am going to take a stab at this since you said you bought them at Lowe's. In google, I typed "dwarf daylilies at Lowes" and there is a listing for "Monrovia 3-Quart Happy Returns Dwarf Daylily" on their website. Of course, that doesn't mean that is the only cultivar they sold as dwarf.

I can also attest that Happy Returns puts out a lot of seed pods. It gets about 12-18" in height. If they are a lemon yellow when blooming, it is probably HR.
